"Kai?" I whispered, sitting next to him on the sofa

"Kai?" I whispered, sitting next to him on the sofa.

Silence.

"Kai, please say something?" I begged, trying again.

He slouched lower against the pillows, refusing to look at me. "What's there to say? I'm not going and that's final. If you've got any sense, you won't go either."

I nibbled on my lower lip anxiously, wondering how best to approach the topic. Kai was clearly in a volatile place right now - I had to be careful with what I said. "I understand that but we need to think about this. Everyone has been invited, not just us. Klaus isn't stupid, he knows it will be dangerous to pull a big stunt when he has so many enemies wandering around his home."

"What is he even doing back here?" he snapped, throwing his hands in the air frustratedly. "I thought he lived in New Orleans now?"

I gulped. "He does," I said quietly. "I guess he thinks holding the event in our own town will give us some sense of security."

"Yeah," Kai replied with a harsh laugh. "I feel much safer knowing that he'll be ten minutes away from my apartment."

Placing a hand on his arm in an attempt to calm him, I sighed. "It's just one night, Kai. We give him what he wants and then he'll disappear back to New Orleans." I leaned closer, lowering my voice to a husky flirtatious tone. "Then I break the sire-bond and you get me all to yourself," I said, my lips only inches from his.

But Kai ignored me, staring at the TV on the wall. "This isn't going to end as well as you think it will, Mikaela. Not for you, anyways."

Feeling almost a little embarrassed at his rejection, I sat back with a sigh, giving him space again. "Are you really mad at me right now?"

Finally, he turned to look at me. "It's not you that I'm mad at."

"Then why won't you kiss me?" I asked, brows pulling together in a frown. This side of Kai was not one that I was used to, and I wasn't sure how to feel about it.

"Because every time I look at your face now," he replied, voice gruff from withholding his anger, "all I can see is your corpse laying in a pool of blood with your heart ripped from your chest cavity."

I blinked, attempting to push the vivid image out of my brain. "Wow. Okay, I guess I could see why that would turn you off."

Kai tilted his head in what I guess was an attempt to be sympathetic. "I didn't mean it like that Mikaela and you know it."

"Everything will be fine," I groaned. "Are you so worried about me dying that you can't even touch me anymore?"

Just as Kai opened his mouth to speak, he was interrupted by the shrill tone of my cell phone alerting me that I had an incoming call. I sighed, grabbing it once more and answering it, checking the caller ID this time.
