The engines were having a wonderful day in the summer sun. But the work in the shunting yards was getting a bit too much for the engines. Even James, who did it part time, was getting worked off his wheels. So, (Y/N) ordered two familiar diesels that were seen for quite a few years on Sodor. One was a purple diesel shunter, while the other was an olive green. On their sides, their names were painted, saying Splatter and Dodge.
"What a nice island," said Splatter. "I know," said Dodge. "Who know's who we'll see." "I know. Think we'll see others?" "What do you mean?" "Other engines." "Of course, we're visitors." "What does that mean?" "I have no idea." Just then, Porter puffed up to them, and said, "Hello, welcome to Paradise Island." "Thank you," they said in unison. "Come with me, you'll meet (Y/N) and she'll tell you what jobs you'll be doing." The two followed Porter to the station, and (Y/N) was waiting for them. "Hello, you two must be Splatter and Dodge," said (Y/N). "Yes ma'am," they said. "Now, you'll be working the yards with Diesel, Lady and Edman." "Of course," said Splatter. "We'll get right on it," said Dodge. They then rattled off to the yards.
Lady, Diesel and Edman were tired out. Just then, they heard some horns, and saw two diesel shunters coming towards them. "Hello," said the purple one, "I'm Splatter." "And I'm Dodge," said the green one. "Nice to meet you," said Diesel, "Come with me, and I'll show you the trains that need to be shunted." Diesel then showed them what they needed to do. But the two were often distracted by simple things, and they made some mistakes at times. Splatter gave Gordon Henry's slow goods, and Henry Gordon's express. It took a bit to get things organized, and when they did, they were a bit late, but soon made up for lost time. So (Y/N) decided to let them help clean up scrap on the line with Diesel 10. Diesel 10 saw who he would be working with, and he said, "Oh, hello Splatter and Dodge." "Um, boss, it's-" Splatter stopped, and a mental record was heard, before he said, "Did he just call us Splatter?" "And Dodge?" asked Dodge. "And not Splodge?" they finished in unison. "Yes, I've changed quite a bit," said Diesel 10, "I'll tell you how it happened."
One month after the Steam Team left Sodor.....
Diesel 10 took pride in his work, crunching scrap, moving it to be melted down. He loved it. He often taunts the remaining steam engines of scrap.
One foggy night, there was a massive load of scrap, and even an old steam engine. He took it into the melting shed, and he said, "Useless old kettle." "Is that what you think of me?" asked a voice. Diesel 10 then managed to see the front of the engine. It's face was smudged with dust and soot. "I can assure you, I am far from useless." "Another steamie in denial! Diesel is the way forward from this point on!" "Yes, you are modern," said the engine, "But how long until new engines come?" Diesel 10 scoffed, "T-That's never gonna happen!" "I was once just like you," said the engine, "I once thought I was invincible, and the pride of the railway. But let me tell you this: YOU are just as expendable as the steam engines."
Many years ago....
The engine was very cocky, and often showed off. She then got too big for her buffers, and caused a massive accident. She was then left to rust. She yelled to the workmen, but they said, "YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF!! YOU CAUSED THE WHOLE MINE TO CLOSE DOWN!! MAYBE LEAVING YOU HERE WILL TEACH YOU SOME SENSE!!!" And so she was left, for many many years, until scrap collectors came to her. The mine had reopened, but she was replaced by a newer, stronger diesel engine.
Smelters Yard....
"And then I ended up here, and was replaced, and brought here. So tell me, what will happen when you become outdated?" "N-N-Never gonna happen!" said Diesel 10. "Say what you will," said the engine, "But take my warning: be careful of what you say to engines at their end, because Karma can come back and shove the words right back at you. Now please, I wish to rest in peace before I'm cut up."
Diesel 10 rolled back, and he saw Arry and Bert. "What were you doing in their?" asked Arry. "Stupid Steamie was in denial! Saying that we'll be out of date soon!" The diesels then looked to the shed, and Diesel 10 gasped. As the doors to the shed closed, he saw no face on the engine, only an old rusty smokebox door. The doors then shut with an unsettling thud. Diesel 10 looked pale. "Seems the exhaust has gotten to you," said Bert, and he and Arry laughed. "SHUT UP!!!" yelled Diesel 10, crunching his claw! They did as soon as Diesel 10 did that.
Diesel 10 is a much wiser engine now. While still menacing, he no longer taunts the steam engines of scrap, and he even stands up for them at times. He even watched one being melted alive, along with a failed diesel engine. Now when he goes into the melting shed, he is always weary, because he always thinks to the old spectral's words.
Present....
Splatter and Dodge were shaken. "So, we're not modern any more?" "No," said Diesel 10, "Now we must be careful, or we end up facing scrap. But enough about that, let's get to work." Splatter and Dodge were soon talking with Diesel 10, and he was telling stories of what happened on Paradise Island, and all the other engines. Soon, the three diesels became true friends, and were in separable.
