(This is set in season four.)

Summary: Y/n is going to visit Spencer's mother with him, planning to break up with him at the end of the night. But her timing isn't so great.

Songfic for the song champagne problems by Taylor Swift.

(All credits go to Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn for the storyline of the song. All I did was apply characters to the preexisting storyline.

P.S. I just googled who wrote the song, I don't 100% know if the credits are going to the right people. I'm just trying to say that I'm not taking credit for it.)

You booked the night train for a reason

So you could sit there in this hurt

Bustling crowds or silent sleepers

You're not sure which is worse

*Spencer's POV*

The soft rumbling of the metro was background noise to my churning train of thought. My eyes were on an empty seat, one of many. I didn't expect it to be busy as it's late, and I appreciated the silence the few sleeping passengers gave.

The hand in my pocket fiddled with the velvet box that I didn't expect to be taking home with me, the other gripping the strap of my bag a little too tightly.

This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't what I had planned.

And it wasn't. I thought I was going to become the luckiest man alive tonight, but I didn't.

*Flashback*

*Y/n POV*

I wanted nothing more than to run and hide. I hated having to pretend nothing was bothering me knowing full well I was planning to destroy a three year relationship.

I tried focusing on driving and paying attention to what was around me. Light layers of snow decorated just about every surface. Sidewalk gutters, parked cars, pedestrian's coats. It was pretty, but not enough to calm my nerves. Spencer had given me very little time in between telling me we were going to visit his mother and actually going.

I glanced over at him, feeling my stomach sink. There was a faint smile on his face, and he looked jittery, as though excited. Probably because he's going to see his mother.

This is going to be a long evening.

After a short conversation at the desk, stairs, and a doorway later, we were sitting at a small table. We being me, Spencer, and his mother Diana, with a supervisory nurse standing off to the side. Spencer was talking to his mother, and for the moment I was free from having to engage in actual conversation. I was happy to just listen. After all, this visit isn't about me.

After a minute, Spencer cleared his throat, standing directly in front of me. Taking my hands in his trembling ones, he opened his mouth to speak.

"Y/n Y/l/n, we've known each other for four years, and it's honestly been the best ones of my life."

What is he doing?

"Lately I realized the impact you actually have on me. How you make me a better person, and how good a person you are."

Wait.

"If someone asked me what I think my life would be like without you, I would answer 'I don't know, and I don't want to.' And I believe that because I love you, Y/n. With all that I am."
