It was probably a mistake to have asked for something stronger to drink. But imagine his surprise when Lan Zhan opened a secret floorboard and hoisted out jars and jars of Emperor’s Smile? Sixteen in all, and of course, Wei Ying wasted no time showing his appreciation.
They had kissed some more...but to be honest, Wei Ying wasn't sure about a lot of things. Drinking, on the other hand, was easy.
Lan Zhan had sat across from him and watched, while he downed one after another, and then, feeling self conscious, he made another mistake, of asking Lan Zhan if he wanted any.
Lan Zhan had indeed been watching Wei Ying, from the way he picked up the cup of liquor, to the way he rested it against those beautiful lips, to the way it trickled down his throat, watching his Adam's apple move with the fluids, and really Lan Zhan thought he could not be blamed for what happened next.
When Wei Ying dispensed with his cup and put the jar to his lips, Lan Zhan couldn't take it any more. He was not able to drink straight from the jar like his counterpart, because you know, manners, but it gave him a perverse thrill to be able to drink from the same place Wei Ying had put those lips of his.
Lan Zhan didn't remember much after that.
Wei Ying on the other hand, had his full with a drunk Jade, who was entirely too strong, and too unreasonable when on the other side of sober.
Lan Zhan had stood up and swayed, dangerously so, and pointed towards the door. Wei Ying hadn't understood what he meant initially, but when he took too long to stand up, Lan Zhan had grabbed his hand in a firm grip and led them out of the Jingshi.
Wei Ying was praying that they wouldn't come across anyone, especially because, one, Lan Zhan was inebriated, and two, Wei Ying would be blamed, most likely by an irate Uncle Qiren looking for any excuse to kick him out of Cloud Recesses.
That was a sobering thought alone, one that had Lan Zhan looking at him in that strangely pensive way. He came back towards Wei Ying and cupped his face with his free hand.
Wei Ying couldn’t help leaning in towards his warm palm, enjoying the simple touch of one who was normally so reserved. The hand was soft except for his fingertips which were slightly rough now, due to years of practising the guqin. Wei Ying imagined those same hands touching him elsewhere and blushed, immediately pushing away such thoughts.
"Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan said, clearly meaning more than what he was saying, which was essentially just his name.
Wei Ying opened his eyes to find golden ones staring back with worry.
"Come."
Apparently, Lan Zhan had made his mind up about something. For now, Wei Ying decided to hold back and see how it played out. So what if he held his breath when they marched past the Hanshi, because he fully expected XiChen to come out and discover what he had done to his baby brother.
But lady luck was on his side after all, and they passed all the buildings unhindered. It was a mild night, and actually quite pleasant to take in a stroll, despite the time of night.
Gusu was a wondrous place, full of peace and natural beauty, and Wei Ying felt something settle inside him as they walked past familiar haunts, places from his memory of studying here when they were teenagers.
Still on they walked, higher and higher up the mountain, until he recognised where Lan Zhan was intending to take him.
The flat peak of the mountainside that they had first released a lantern together, was still the same even after all these years. Lan Zhan made him sit down, and he joined him, pulling out all the essential requirements for making a lantern, including paintbrushes and colours, and a pallette to mix them on.
