Wei Ying didn't often volunteer to go shopping. Frankly, this was because it made Lan Zhan nervous, and for a lot of reasons.

Wei Ying was a flighty shopper too, so sometimes he would manage to follow the list, just mess up on quantities, or if he saw a great deal, he would think of it as an investment. For example, one time he and Lan Zhan ate tinned green beans for a whole month, and he promised, Lan Zhan made him solemnly promise, that if he wanted to buy anything that wasn't on the list, he was to call.

This was because Lan Zhan liked to prepare ahead of time, his meals were planned with all ingredients needed already in the house.

Wei Ying was the fox in the hen house when it came to their larder.

So Lan Zhan wrapped a scarf around Wei Ying’s neck and placed the list in his hand securely.

Wei Ying smiled broadly at him and sauntered off, humming to himself. Curiously, it was the tune that Lan Zhan had sung to him before...somehow it had taken root inside his mind and now he liked to hum it to himself. In his spare hand was a bag of remnant clothes that they were donating to charity. The supermarket had huge containers where people came to dump their unwanted items, and Wei Ying had decided to get rid of a few clothes so his room could look tidier.

It was still early morning and the roads were deserted. He watched his breath puff out in little gasps and imagined he was a dragon.

When he got to the container, he had to wade through many boxes of clothes and shoes, people deciding to leave out the container than actually take their things out and place one by one into the right place. Wei Ying had just managed to empty his carrier bag, when there was a shuffling noise.

His first thought was rats. The place was dirty enough for them, with many places to hide. He speeded up with the final item, but then to his abject horror, found that somehow his scarf had gotten tied up in the lid for the container and it wasn't coming loose!

Plus the shuffling sounds became louder, as Wei Ying pulled at his scarf, and the wind blew harder, making his eyes water and then the box shuffled towards him.

He shrieked.

There was no one around to help him, he was trapped and now rats were coming to eat him, and where was Lan Zhan right now?? Right now, when he needed him?

The stress of all this was making him panic and the scarf wrapped tighter around his neck and then he cried for real.

All of a sudden, warm hands were on his cheeks and he knew Lan Zhan had arrived.

"Lan Zhan...Lan Zhan you came!" He breathed out.

Lan Zhan was sort of out of breath; when Wei Ying had left, he had turned around and seen the money for the shopping on the counter, which both of them had forgotten about. Lan Zhan wasn't sure if Wei Ying had other means to pay, and certainly didn't want him to have a wasted trip, so he had yanked on a jacket, slid into his shoes and raced after him.

Covid restrictions meant that once Wei Ying had entered the supermarket, he would have to phone him to come back outside to pick up the money and that would just have been an inconvenience.

When he had heard Wei Ying calling his name, he had panicked and ran faster, only to see the young man in terrible distress. He had managed to tangle himself with his scarf and was totally making it worse by trying to pull away.

"Wei Ying! Wait!" He said, firmly.

Wei Ying calmed down immediately at the sound of his voice. Lan Zhan couldn't stand to see the tears on the now red face, and hoped it wasn't too forward of him to wipe it with a fresh white handkerchief. Wei Ying was too embarrassed to let him do it and took it from him instead.
