There are times when you decide you want to do something, or rather, you might want to do something, and then the Universe decides it's going to help you. It does this by reminding you at every opportunity that you wanted to do 'the thing'. It's worse than an overzealous advertisement campaign, because the bombardment is REAL, until you decide that you're absolutely, totally, fully invested in doing 'The Thing'.

Nowadays, it was Google who did this too, and semantics, because the end result was the same: 'The Thing' got done, and everyone was happy.

In Lan Zhan’s case, he was watching a YouTube video on arts and crafts, specifically on how to create origami bunnies, when suddenly the next thing he knew, he was watching a man paint nails on someone he obviously loved.

He couldn't see their faces, and he supposed it wasn't necessary, as the focus was meant to be on their hands. But they were having such a good time, and it was obviously contagious, because Lan Zhan found himself smiling (GASP!!) at their antics.

The man, Suibian, was plugging a nail and beauty shop called Nailed It! run by someone called Jiang YanLi, gushing about their range of services, and about which kind of nails lasted the longest, what kind of artwork could be done upon such a small surface area, and other things that Lan Zhan had not considered.

But it was his gentle voice that Lan Zhan fell in love with, straight away.

It was naturally melodious and quirky, as if he was holding himself back for some reason. And then he would laugh suddenly, and it cracked open a secret place in the deepest part of Lan Zhan’s soul. He couldn’t explain it, but he was addicted to that sound.

And then the shape of his hands? Beautiful.

His lovely nails had black nail polish as a background, but then Suibian had added different shaped stars on all of his digits, a crescent moon on the third finger of his right hand, and a full moon on the third finger of his left hand.

Lan Zhan was transfixed.

At first, he thought the people on his screen might be romantically involved with each other, because they got along so well together, and their friendly banter was easing away Lan Zhan’s tension. But then the giggling man had let slip a quietly admonishing, scandalised "ShiJie! Don't move!" And Lan Zhan felt so much better about the whole thing.

You see, Lan Zhan had been toying with the idea of painting his nails. For quite some time now, too.

The biggest problem was, he had no idea how to go about it. He thought about doing it himself and then immediately wondered if his efforts would be subpar and everyone would end up laughing at him.

That was simply unacceptable!

He didn't feel comfortable enough to do it himself then, mostly because the right hand doing the left would naturally be fine, but the left doing the right? When it couldn't even hold a pen with any amount of dignity? It didn't bear thinking about it!

He often looked at his hands and wondered how it would feel to have something colourful there, a splash of life, a reminder that he didn't have to be boring, if he didn't want to be. If he chose to have something painted on his nails, it would be a result of his own decision, and a small part of him rejoiced in this tiny rebellion.

For a short amount of time, he would have pretty nails, maybe just something plain and simple to start with so he and everyone who would see his nails, could get used to seeing them be a bit more on the lively side. (Mostly Uncle Qiren).

And the worse case scenario was that if something went wrong, there was a Nail Polish Remover solution to whatever they didn't like.

Lan Zhan liked and subscribed to that channel, immediately.
