The trick was to identify the situations where they had the most interaction, and Wei Ying had narrowed it down to three: Lan Zhan had said he had fallen in love with him on the rooftop when Wei Ying was climbing over, after he had disabled the wards. That was a pivotal moment for them.
Second would be them spending that whole month in the library when Wei Ying was punished and had to write out the rules three hundred times, all three thousand of them. That, he was looking forward to.
There was so much they could do in the library, all alone together.
And finally, after they had both been punished for drinking, when they had gotten sucked into the cave from the cold pond and Lan Zhan had protected him with his headband.
Marriage, that's what that was...Wei Ying thought, sniggering. Lan Zhan had been sneaky about it too.
Time really was limited, because he had to fit in the whole month, and then those extra days in the cold pond cave, all in the space of a few hours, so maybe he could skip the roof part.
It mostly went his way anyway, and there were no bad memories connected with their duel.
So, decision made, Wei Ying settled down to wait for Lan Zhan. He didn't have to wait long, for the door opened and Lan Zhan had returned.
"Can we go to sleep early, my love?" Wei Ying asked him, pretending to stretch and exaggerating a yawn.
"Wei Ying is not feeling well?" Lan Zhan immediately came to him, checking his temperature, and then kneeling while he checked his pulse.
Wei Ying had forgotten about Lan Zhan's protective instincts kicking in. He lightly grasped the wrist at his forehead and brought the hand down, kissing the centre of his palm.
"I'm fine, Lan Zhan. Just a bit tired, that's all."
"We can sleep."
They got ready for bed, and luckily Lan Zhan thought nothing of it. Wei Ying was having a hard time not falling asleep yet, because he still had to activate the talismans. Usually, Lan Zhan's even breathing did it for him, but he had to stay awake until Lan Zhan was really asleep.
He sat up when he was sure.
Lan Zhan looked so peaceful in his sleep, that Wei Ying almost didn't want to do it. But then, he remembered how Lan Zhan had confessed when he was drunk. Without further hesitation, he gently placed one talisman on Lan Zhan's forehead, murmuring the incantation to set it and did the same for himself.
Wei Ying opened his eyes and found himself sitting by the waterfall, watching the mist drifting over the boulders, the sound of the water lulling him back to sleep. The warmth of the sun on his face felt amazing and-
"Wei Ying!"
That too serious voice spoke, sending shivers down his back.
Wei Ying opened his eyes and saw golden eyes filled with concern, his face a little too close.
"Lan Zhan!" He threw his arms around the Jade, who stumbled back in surprise. "You came to get me!"
Lan Zhan unwrapped his arms, putting them correctly by Wei Ying's side. His ears were almost red, and he was...angry?
"Lan Zhan...? It's me...your Wei Ying?" He stepped forward, and Lan Zhan stepped back.
Wei Ying stared back at him, incredulously. What was wrong with his husband?
"Wei Ying must return to the library. Must finish punishment." He was told firmly.
Wei Ying was thinking back to those talismans...he had added that extra stroke for memory retention...hadn't he? He had definitely done it on his own one...maybe he had forgotten....because this Lan Zhan didn't seem to remember anything...
