Any day that started with a headache was a bad sign that there was more to come.
Luckily someone had kept a glass of water and painkillers within easy reach, and Wei Ying was chugging them down with gusto and piling whatever blessings he could muster onto that person.
He dragged himself to the kitchen, bleary-eyed and feeling terrible when he discovered that Lan Zhan, beautiful soul that he was, had made him a breakfast he could heat up in the microwave. There was also a note, but he decided he would tackle that after eating something. His stomach was growling so loudly, if he didn't make a suitable sacrifice to it soon, it was going to climb out of his body and help itself.
Twenty minutes later, he could manage keeping his eyes open for longer than thirty seconds, once he'd eaten.
Then he picked up the letter.
Good morning Wei Ying,
That may be questionable for you, but I took the liberty of contacting your boss and telling them that you were on site, and would be getting to the office later than planned.
"On site" was not specified and could mean anywhere.
Just so you know.
And Lans do not lie.
But I felt it was an emergency since I could not wake you.
Sincerely,
Lan WangJi.
Wei Ying read it again, feeling like a schoolgirl with a love letter from her crush.
He picked up his phone and called Lan Zhan.
"Hello Wei Ying." He said in his clipped, formal voice.
But Wei Ying could detect a warmth in between the words, and if his words were a painting, then the emotions Lan Zhan used were the canvas upon which they existed.
"Hello Lan Zhan! I just wanted to say thank you for covering for me. And the breakfast...and the painkillers." Now that he thought about it, there was a lot to thank Lan Zhan for.
"Thanks are not needed. We live together...it would be remiss of me not to look out for Wei Ying."
"Anyway...it was really kind of you. That's all I wanted to say..." Actually, there was so much more he wanted to say, like, Lan Zhan I think I'm in love with you, and will you go out with me?
But just as he was gathering the courage to say something, anything like that, Lan Zhan cleared his throat. He sounded embarrassed.
"...was there anything else? I am currently in a meeting. And you are on speakerphone."
"Oh! Oh my God! I'm so sorry...here, I'll put the phone down. See you at night! Love you!" He hung up, and then was mortified.
Wei Ying stared at his phone like it was a cockroach.
What on Earth had possessed him to say that? Lan Zhan was going to kill him! How many people were present at that meeting? How unprofessional was that??
Wei Ying wanted to bury himself somewhere, preferably deep underground where the sun would never reach!
He hid his face in his arms and wailed.
Loudly.
How could he have said that?? And after Lan Zhan had been so kind to him too? Wei Ying was a terrible friend and an even worse roommate!
