Wei Ying couldn't stop shaking.
Jiang Cheng had wrapped a blanket around his shoulders, but Wei Ying felt a freezing coldness from the pit of his stomach straight to his heart, and no amount of external warmth was going to help.
Jiang YanLi was sitting next to him.
"Y-you s-should rest, Shijie. In y-your c-condition..." His teeth were chattering too much for him to speak properly.
She pressed the mug of hot, sweet tea into his hand, holding it steady for him. Wei Ying sipped it slowly, hoping it would make a difference.
The police had brought reinforcements; the detectives had grilled him again and again about what had happened, there were others who were taking fingerprints and dusting his door in that hot pink coloured powder. They were checking his doormat too.
Another set of detectives had taken the box away for x-ray analysis. It was now three am, and Wei Ying was ready to pass out.
But the detectives were not finished yet.
**********
Lan Zhan had been fast asleep when he was shaken awake. He sat up immediately, when he saw it was his brother who had woken him up.
"Uncle?" He asked, at first expecting it to be a family emergency.
"He's fine, Didi." XiChen said, patiently. But he also looked tired and he wasn't smiling.
"What is it?"
"Jiang YanLi called me." He paused, collecting his words. There was no way Lan Zhan was going to take this well. "She said someone had left a package outside Wei Ying's apartment. They think it was from his ex-boyfriend. Meng Yao."
XiChen hadn't even finished speaking before Lan Zhan was leaving his bed, hurrying to get dressed.
"They called the police, and both his brother and sister are with him." He saw the determined look on Lan Zhan's face. "I'll drive you, Didi. I'll go and get ready."
He left Lan Zhan's room with Lan Zhan looking after him, appreciating the fact that XiChen thought the matter too important, and had come to tell him straight away, not giving any thought to how he was dressed.
Lan Zhan waited by their front door, anxiously. He had tried to call Wei Ying but his phone was switched off...and frankly, Lan Zhan didn't blame him. XiChen hurried towards him, car keys in hand. He had left a written message for his Uncle and a verbal one with their butler, so the older gentleman wouldn't worry.
It was only once they were on their way to the bakery, that Lan Zhan had another thought.
"Why does Xiongzhang have Jiang YanLi's number?"
"We're old friends from school." XiChen told him smoothly, ommiting the fact that he'd only got it three days ago.
"How...how is Wei Ying?" He asked because he couldn't bear it any longer.
"Not good." XiChen risked a look in his direction. And drove faster.
The bakery was swarming with teams of police. Lan Zhan checked his watch, it was past three in the morning. That meant Wei Ying must have been awake from whenever he had found the package.
They were stopped by the police.
"You cannot enter. This is a crime scene." One particularly burly policeman told them.
"We are family." XiChen lied smoothly.
He must have been convincing because the same detectives asked their superiors and then the tape was lifted.
