"There are never enough books." John Steinbeck

Wei WuXian was still not used to waking up early, and nine o'clock in the morning counted as early.

A-Yuan was already impatiently going through their checklist and Wei WuXian promised himself that before he settled down at the library, he would grab another chocolate latte from the cafe downstairs, otherwise he was not going to make it through the morning.

"Weady?" A-Yuan beamed at him, just as they left.

"Yes and are you?" Wei WuXian swung him up into his arms.

A-Yuan was getting heavier now and Wei WuXian was in two minds about that. It was lovely to see him growing up, so much happier and healthy, but at the same time, Wei WuXian knew he would try to carry him as often as he could, because soon, he wouldn't be able to. This time was precious for both of them, and he only decided on Daycare because his Shijie told him to, in between Kindergarten.

This system was great for A-Yuan because he learned about making friends and became socially active, and his thirst for knowledge expanded so that he looked forward to leaving their home everyday. For Wei WuXian, though he missed his son desperately, it gave him a block of time where he could work consistently and without interruption, because writing always flowed better that way.

He had noticed that there was a chop and change element to his words when he wrote distractedly compared to now where he could devote all his attention to his creations.

And it was necessary because writing paid their bills and kept a roof over their heads...perhaps that was oversimplifying but it was close enough.

In the end, it actually made them closer and improved both their lives, these temporary separations.

"Imma gonna see JingYi, Imma gonna see JingYi..." A-Yuan chanted as they got on the bus.

Strangers smiled at the cute kid chatting to his father, obviously happy and well-looked after.

Two stops and twenty minutes later, they were saying goodbye.

"You know, it's usually the kid that cries." A-Yuan's teacher laughed as she handed the three year old a tissue so he could wipe his father's face.

"Baba...we can go home if you wanna?"

Wei WuXian made out A-Yuan's anxious face and pulled himself together.

"No, it's okay. You can go and play with JingYi...really." He took the tissue from his son and blew his nose into it. "I'll be fine."

A-Yuan kissed his cheeks, both because he thought his Baba needed an extra one today. And then he patted his head, which made Wei WuXian laugh suddenly.

Satisfied that his Baba was telling the truth, A-Yuan waved and ran towards the other little boy waiting for him.

Wei WuXian waited until his son disappeared within the sea of other children and then he left.

He returned home and cleaned up the remains of their breakfast, prepped for their dinner and tidied up quickly, finding the house too quiet to stay there by himself, which was strange because that had been his norm for the past almost a year.

But he had an inkling as to why when his heart rate sped up at the thought of spending the day at the Institute...and possibly see Lan Zhan.

He was definitely excited to see him...and he remembered what his Shijie had said: to go up to him and ask him out.

Was he going to be that bold?

Could he do it?

Wei WuXian shivered in anticipation.
