His Shijie had left Wei WuXian sitting on the bench, thinking about what she had said to him.
If he was allowed to be honest with himself, even just a little bit, he knew he was feeling better about her not being at Lotus Pier. It went some ways to assuaging his guilt for not wanting to return, because now that he was letting himself process his complicated feelings, he understood it better.
But he needed a distraction...the letter burning a hole in his sleeve, would help with that. Wei WuXian glanced at the open door of the Jingshi, hoping that Lan Zhan wouldn't come out to see what he was doing, at least not for another five minutes.
With one ear trained towards the door and any possible movement from that direction, he opened the letter.
He snorted out a laugh at Bichen's admission to kissing the "idiot"... maybe there was something in the air of Cloud Recesses...like pollen freely infecting those allergy sufferers, love was equally potent, it seemed...
But he sobered up pretty quickly as his eyes skimmed the rest of the letter.
Bichen had fallen in love...and regretted it.
That was...unexpected.
But Wei WuXian was smiling again at the futile wishes Bichen expressed, wanting the kiss to be a fluke...and then...and then wishing it was with him?
Wow! Just...wow...
As long as he was being honest, Wei WuXian understood that feeling. Here he was, smooching Lan Zhan as if his life depended upon it, and knowing that in the back of his mind, he had feelings for Bichen...
Was it possible to fall out of love? Or was it predestined? Who decided upon these matches? Who said, this person will fall in love with that person, and everything will be okay?
Wei WuXian had never given much thought to love and romance. Flirting? Yes, by all means. Of course it wasn't the same thing, of course not. One was serious and the other...was not.
But to love someone?
Wasn't that so much more serious? He could not believe that it was changeable, like Bichen hoped.
He had heard of fated mates...soulmates that were bound to find each other, no matter what. But then that begged the question: what if the person you fell in love with, wasn't your soulmate? What then? What if one was met before the other? What guarantees did they have?
He too treasured his friendship with Bichen. How much he looked forward to his letters...he was sure it was unhealthy.
So...what if Bichen was his soulmate? And what if...instead of falling in love with him, Wei WuXian had fallen in love with .... Lan Zhan?
As if summoned by his thoughts, Lan WangJi walked through the open door of the Jingshi and was making his way towards him. Wei WuXian made a show of adjusting his clothes and hid the letter in his hand, smiling up at him.
Lan WangJi faltered for a second, wondering if he would ever get used to it, that smile so bright like a second Sun. But he continued, hoping that Wei Ying had not noticed.
"Sit, sit." Enthused Wei Ying, pulling him down.
"Is Wei Ying...alright?" Lan Zhan wondered aloud, because he had been looking a little sad beforehand.
"Too many thoughts up here." Wei Ying tapped the side of his head.
"Does Wei Ying want to talk about it?" Even as he said the words, Lan Zhan realised that he wanted Wei Ying to unburden himself, to use Lan Zhan for comfort.
