It was an ordinary day.
That's what was so strange about it, the fact that nothing seemed different or out of place or extraordinary...just a day of normalness.
In the morning, Lan Zhan dropped Wei Ying off at the coffee shop where he worked, as usual half asleep and if it wasn't for this lift, Wei Ying would most likely be late.
He grinned sleepily at Lan Zhan and patted his arm, both actions being the possible triggers for cardiac arrest because Lan Zhan was a hundred percent, head over heels, completely in love with Wei Ying...and wonderful man that he was...he did not know it.
Yet.
That tiny word was bigger than it looked in real life.
Yet was synonymous for maybe, which meant possibly and covered a vast area of don't lose hope.
So Lan Zhan kept trying to build up the courage to confess to his flatmate that he did not want to just remain friends with him; he actually felt more and was there the slightest chance that Wei Ying felt the same? Could they head towards a literary sunset holding hands in the near future?
He shuddered at even thinking about opening his mouth to say something so forward.
But it was okay because today was the day.
It was a monumental decision for Lan Zhan because adding to the worry that Wei Ying may not feel the same way, he also did not want to risk losing their friendship, hence the delay in saying anything which might jeopardise that.
"Don't worry about me, Lan Zhan..." Wei Ying yawned again. "I'll make the first cup of coffee an espresso and I'll be fine. Oh...and don't wait up for me tonight, I've got a date. So no dinner either...see you...if not tonight, then definitely tomorrow morning." He added, wrapping Lan Zhan’s scarf tighter around his neck to ward off the October chill.
He waved and smiled again, before turning around and heading inside.
"Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan called out, stopping him in his tracks.
Wei Ying jogged back to the car.
"Yes, Lan Zhan? Don't wanna let me go? I know my manager is a prick and avoiding him is the way...but I have to show up first!" He grinned again, all casual like and having no idea that Lan Zhan’s heart was in tatters.
Like someone had pulled it out of his chest and stamped on it, multiple times. And then thrown it under a truck.
It was a miracle he was still breathing, but Lan Zhan told himself to keep it together...just for a few seconds more...
"Lunch." He thrust the packed food box into Wei Ying's trembling hands, regretting that he hadn’t given it earlier because now Wei Ying was colder due to this delay.
"Oh my god, Lan Zhan! Thank you so much!!" He opened the box a crack and squealed in delight at the contents. "You always go to so much trouble for me...but I absolutely love the bunny shaped rice balls...they're so cute!"
Lan Zhan let himself feel happy at those words.
It meant that Wei Ying was aware of the extra trouble it took pushing the soft rice into the bunny molds and making sure they were perfect. Lan Zhan loved drawing eyes and a cute twitching nose with black food colouring too; it was painstaking and needed a steady hand, but well worth it to receive such praise from the love of his life.
Wei Ying gave him another heart-stopping smile and sauntered away.
Lan Zhan was happy that he had done something to make Wei Ying’s day a bit happier. He had contributed to nourishing Wei Ying because if he was left to his own devices, the chances were that Wei Ying would substitute a healthy balanced meal with just more coffee.
