It all started when Lan Zhan took Wei Ying out for dinner. It wasn't even a posh restaurant, just a quiet little table at Wen Popo's Kitchen, Wei Ying's favourite place to eat where the spice levels were closest to his Yunmeng palette.
They finished eating, and then, just before dessert arrived, Lan Zhan gave Wei Ying an envelope. He watched, feeling warm and happy, as Wei Ying sniffed it appreciatively, the scent of sandalwood drifting between them before his golden fingers ripped it apart impatiently, a signature move of his personality.
A silver key falls out onto the red and white chequered tablecloth, attached to a keyring with a picture of the two of them and their bunnies.
It had been a whole year since they started dating, and Lan Zhan had subtly and not so subtly mentioned moving in together, many times. While Wei Ying hadn't said no, he hadn't actually said yes, either, and Lan Zhan thought he had been very patient up until now.
What he wasn't prepared for was when Wei Ying burst into tears.
************
Wei Ying was inconsolable and not even aware when Lan Zhan had the rest of their meal packed to take away and brought him to his house.
Lan Zhan lived in a detached home with a lovely garden at the front and the back. There was plenty of space for a family to live here quite comfortably, let alone two boyfriends absolutely besotted with each other and their two bunny babies.
So obviously, it wasn't the house or the boyfriend (or the bunny children) which was the problem.
It took time and patience for Lan Zhan to get the story straight from Wei Ying, and once he knew the truth, for he was adept at seeing it even when it was hidden behind seemingly kind/possessive gestures, he made Wei Ying go to sleep upstairs in what he considered their bedroom.
After that, he left a curt message using Wei Ying’s phone to tell his boyfriend's siblings that Wei Ying was spending the night with him and not to worry about him.
Then he called his brother.
XiChen agreed that this was a sensitive case, and Wei Ying would most likely need therapy; he had a few great recommendations and Lan Zhan liked one in particular, resolving to talk to Wei Ying about it tomorrow.
*************
Initially, Wei Ying had been sceptical about therapy. He was a pendulum, swinging between wanting to go and refusing to, until one day, Lan Zhan took him there without telling him where they were going, and then sitting down in the waiting room after pushing Wei Ying into the therapist's room, saying, "I'll be right here. If you want to leave, we can go."
It's the promise in his eyes that steels Wei Ying into facing his demons, or in this case, Xiao XingChen.
The first thing Xiao XingChen tells him, makes Wei Ying cry again.
"You have rights, Wei WuXian. Look them up on Google."
(Wei Ying did, even though Xiao XingChen went through them one by one, making sure he understood each of them).
The sessions were weekly, sometimes twice a week, and Lan Zhan began noticing a difference.
Wei Ying was changing, and it was for the better, for both of them. Lan Zhan had never held him back to begin with, so that was why it had been nearly impossible to uncover the truth about Wei Ying’s other life, the one where Lan Zhan wasn't around.
Wei Ying lived with his adopted brother, and they both worked for the same company, where Jiang WanYin was the CEO and Wei Ying held the next position of acting CEO.
