Wei WuXian made his way up the mountain at quietly as he could. It had been far too long since he had returned, yet the path was familiar. And a secret part of him wondered whether a certain somebody would be waiting with SiZhui.
The message sent by his son was cryptic to say the least, and Wei WuXian was not sure at all of the reception he would find once he reached the white pillars of Cloud Recesses.
All was quiet around him, a peacefulness intrinsic to this place. Only the sudden nocturnal sounds of an owl disturbing the night, the hush of the wind and the odd cricket were his companions on this solitary path. He wondered why SiZhui had asked him to come specifically at this time, when no one was around.
His sharp mind was already coming up with possibilities, discarding their worth as unlikely; well, he would just have to be patient.
But he was not prepared for the sudden onslaught of memories that attacked him once he rounded that curve in the mountainside, nor the stab in his gut as he remembered the first time he had arrived here. It was with his beloved sister and brother. At a time when they thought they would never part.
When loyalty was unquestionable.
He sighed.
The past was the past, and it belonged there.
Not here, where SiZhui was waiting for him, looking far too serious. And he was alone.
SiZhui stepped free of the wards and bowed.
Now that Wei Ying knew he was A-Yuan, he brought the boy into his arms, enjoying his unique scent of sandalwood and lotus flowers.
"How have you been?" He whispered, though they were alone.
The density of the silence seemed to call for it.
"I am well...but there is a reason why we need your help." SiZhui told him, leading him through the wards.
Wei WuXian wanted to ask about Lan Zhan. Just the thrill of saying his name in Wei WuXian's mind, it made him giddy with pleasure...but then he hardened his resolve. If Lan Zhan felt anything for him, he would have joined him after the Guanyin Temple fiasco.
Alas, such was his fate, to love someone in a solitary fashion like this, to burn for just a chance to see him.
Maybe he was away somewhere, on a night hunt or on Clan business.
Wei WuXian strengthened his mind.
No more lapses...no more.
He was here for an important reason, and SiZhui was going to tell him.
Soon.
Right?
But they walked in silence.
Wei WuXian felt his eyes burning at the sights, because every place held a fond memory, every place bit at his conscience like a persistent mosquito.
He remembered Lan Zhan dragging him to the library for punishment, to write out the rules, he remembered climbing the Great magnolia tree, hoping to get a glimpse of him on the days when Lan Zhan was missing, he remembered closer to this time, running with Lan Zhan to save Shifu from the out-of-control arm and its resentment.
He was surprised when he was shaken out of his thoughts by their stillness, for SiZhui had stopped, and his own body had copied him.
They were outside the Jingshi.
Wei WuXian could sense Lan Zhan was near; his close proximity lent speed to his heart, battering against his rib cage.
This wasn't fair at all.
