Jiang YanLi smiled encouragingly at her brothers.
"Come on, is it such a surprise? We have an end of year party every year! Always on December the thirty first, always, without fail, at eight pm."
"A-jieeeee! Don't do this to us!" Jiang Cheng pleaded, because the desperation was real.
Wei Ying thunked his head on the little table in front of him.
"You two are just being dramatic. I've told you before, you can come alone, it's totally fine." She delicately sipped her hot chocolate, watching both of them.
Jiang Cheng caught Wei Ying's eyes and groaned.
"See, Shijie, that's okay for you to say. You've got the Peacock, and little Jin Ling." Wei Ying waved a breadstick at her. "But me and him, we have no one."
Jiang Cheng blushed.
"Why don't you two just come together?" She suggested innocently.
"Why don't you two just come together?" Jiang Cheng repeated snarkily in a higher pitch, rolling his eyes.
"Oh, you guys! Why are you making such a big deal out of it?" She laughed, not taking them seriously at all.
"That's even worse! No offence!" Wei Ying told Jiang Cheng before he could retaliate with a swift kick under the table.
"I agree, and none taken!" Jiang Cheng put forward his fist for Wei Ying to bump.
"The thing is Shijie, no one wants to come with me. And because the parents are there, it becomes this whole issue of, why didn't you bring someone, time is running out, you won't be young forever, etc, etc, etc." Wei Ying chewed on his abused breadstick viciously.
"And then, they make suggestions." Jiang Cheng added sourly.
"Oh God! You're right." Wei Ying groaned. "It becomes an ordeal. Can't we just have a quiet night in? I can tolerate the Peacock for one of those, no sweat."
"Yeah, A-Jie, how about that?" Jiang Cheng looked at her hopefully.
"I know someone who wouldn't mind coming with you." YanLi's face broke into a wide grin.
"Who?" Wei Ying asked, sulking.
"Lan WangJi. He really likes you, you know." She assured him.
"No! No, he doesn't!" Wei Ying blushed and hated himself for it.
Lan Zhan was just a friend, and no amount of pining after him was going to change that. He thought of the pale Jade with the golden eyes, always so intense when they rested upon him, and Wei Ying shivered. He banished the thoughts quickly, returning to his drink.
"And you?" YanLi turned to Jiang Cheng. "When are you going to ask your crush out? Lan XiChen will tag along if I ask him too, and if his uncle doesn't have any plans for them."
Jiang Cheng looked interested for a total of four seconds before hiding his red face.
"Look boys, this party is going ahead, and you're definitely coming, or I won't talk to you for a year until the next one. Am I clear?" She stood up, having finished her meal.
"Alright, alright!" Wei Ying placated her with her palms up. "I'll find someone to come with."
"Yeah, me too!" Jiang Cheng gulped at the real threat in her voice.
They waited until she was far away.
"And she says we're being dramatic!" Wei Ying said, sniffing. "What are you gonna do?"
