Days fly by as fast as petals on the wind.

True to her word, although Jiang YanLi is much kinder than Lan Zhan expected, Jiang Cheng is still his irritable self, often lacing his words with barbs designed to hurt. Lan Zhan is only silent because a) he thinks he deserves it, and b) this is Wei Ying's brother. It is natural to feel protective of one's sibling, whether they are older or younger, age does not matter. Lan Zhan thinks about how he would feel if anyone had treated his Xiongzhang that way, and a slice of anger rips through him, cementing his resolve not to react.

Several months pass by like this.

But one day, Jiang Cheng says something extra cruel. Lan Zhan is unaffected, staring at his cup of tea with meditative concentration, however, there's a sharp reprimand from the beautiful man next to him.

They're all eating together in the canteen, and it's late enough that only Jiang Cheng, Jiang YanLi, Wen Qing and Wen Ning are seated with Lan Zhan and Wei Ying.

"Jiang WanYin, apologise, right now!"

Lan Zhan's eyes shoot upwards to a Wei Ying absolutely blazing with fury, a flash of red colouring his eyes as he stares down his little brother.

Jiang Cheng scowls, but even he seems to recognise that he's crossed a line, in Wei Ying's book, at least.

"Sorry, Lan WangJi." It is not sincere, but dripping with sarcasm.

"Apologise and mean it, this time." Wei Ying says between clenched teeth. He stands up, his whole demeanour threatening like a live wire.

Jiang Cheng stares back at his brother in disbelief. He also stands up. "YOU might be okay with letting him back into your life, but not me, okay? You don't know what it was like, seeing you like that, like-"

"That's enough." Wei Ying replies in a cold voice.

The temperature drops to freezing.

"I am only going to say this once. The past is in the past. I...I have forgiven whatever happened."

There is a collective in-drawn breath from everyone, including Lan Zhan. He can see how hard this is for Wei Ying, simply from the way his hands are clenched in tight fists.

"But-"

"No. Jiang Cheng, in fact, all of you, listen well. Lan Zhan is here, and for however long he is, he must be treated with respect. A slight to him is an insult to me. Got it?" He's vibrating with fury.

There are murmurs of acquiescence, and then they all get up and leave, one by one.

Wei Ying stares them down, until it's just him and Lan Zhan left.

Lan Zhan can't believe Wei Ying has stood up for him like that. There's so much to unpack here, from Wei Ying's inability to believe that for Lan Zhan, he means to stay forever by his side, to Wei Ying's forgiving him at all, something Lan Zhan believed wholeheartedly was not possible, baring his unworthiness, to Wei Ying's defence of him.

But apparently, he's not done.

"It is alright," Lan Zhan says quietly, still coming to terms with Wei Ying saying that he has forgiven him.

"No, it fucking isn't. How long has that been going on?" Wei Ying turns to him then, his eyes bright with anger.

Lan Zhan can admit to himself, Wei Ying is incredibly hot like this. He's overcome with the urge to kiss him. But he reminds himself of his vow and sits on his hands instead.

Wei Ying reaches out, a hand cupping his face. Lan Zhan forces himself to breathe naturally, but he leans into the touch feeling like a cat.

Wei Ying is touching him...
