Wei Ying knocks on the door of Lan Zhan’s home, terribly nervous and hoping his new boyfriend's uncle wasn't there yet. He knew the Lan brothers were close with their uncle, but the man was stern and intimidating…and Wei Ying would just…rather not.

The door opens and it's Lan XiChen.

Okay…that's great.

Wei Ying wipes his free hand on his trousers and smiles brightly.

"Hello XiChen-Ge! Is Lan Zhan available?" He says enthusiastically, hoping to feel it properly very soon.

"Who is it, XiChen?" A gruff voice says from behind him, and Wei Ying pales considerably.

"It's WangJi's boyfriend." XiChen says, smiling just as brightly back.

"I can come back - oh…" Wei Ying is pulled into the house without further ado.

"Nonsense! Of course you can see WangJi on his birthday!" XiChen not-shoves him into the living room, where Lan Zhan is sitting on the couch.

He looks pleased to see Wei Ying, and it's this thought that gives Wei Ying the courage to step forward.

But…

There are many expensive looking gifts on the coffee table. There's an unopened computer, a kindle, the latest version, and a new phone.

And a glowering Uncle Qiren sitting not too far away.

Wei Ying bows at them generally before XiChen pushes him to sit down right next to Lan Zhan.

Lan Zhan smiles at him…at least, Wei Ying thinks he is.

It's hard to tell what Lan Zhan is feeling, sometimes. Wei Ying thinks he's getting better at reading him, but it's not easy. Lan Zhan has promised to be a little more vocal and honest about how he feels and Wei Ying thinks that's a lot of progress already.

Lan Zhan reaches over to hold his hand.

"Happy birthday, Sweetheart." Wei Ying says, still smiling.

Lan Zhan’s eyes, so brilliant and gold, like melted caramel, warm immeasurably.

"Thank you, Wei Ying." Lan Zhan replies.

His eyes shift to the white bag in Wei Ying's hands; it's completely white except for two pink ears sticking up. There are two cute eyelashes drawn on one side and the top is lined with white funfur. Wei Ying smiles and turns the bag around to reveal a bunny tail on the other side.

It's so cute!

Wei Ying has paused, because now in light of the valuable presents on the table, his looks cheap and … now he's not so sure Lan Zhan will like them. But the look on Lan Zhan’s face convinces him that maybe it'll be alright.

So he hands the bag over.

Lan Zhan thanks him again, and he's so cute that Wei Ying wants to climb into his lap and kiss him silly…but Uncle Qiren is already frowning. Wei Ying turns slightly so he doesn't have to see the old man.

Lan Zhan pulls out the first item: it's a pair of pale blue flannel bunny pyjamas. They're very soft and cuddly, and Lan Zhan puts his cheek on them to feel the fluffiness. His eyes are still warm and soft, too.

Wei Ying smiles encouragingly back.

Next, Lan Zhan pulls out a pale cream hoodie which matches the bag; it's got two big bunny ears and a tail, and Lan Zhan loves it!

And there's still something else in the bag…Lan Zhan pulls out a packet of gel pens with bunny toppers, bunny shaped erasers and a bunny shaped post-it pad.
