XiChen was writing missives back in the Hanshi when there was a knock on the door.

He sighed to himself, plastered on a neutral smile on his face, and asked them to come in.

"Have you seen Hanguang-Jun this morning? He didn't show up for teaching his class, and Young Master Wei hasn't arrived for his lesson with the Baby Lans." The disciple blurted out straight away, barely taking the time to bow.

"Didn't they return late last night after the night hunt?" XiChen stands up, concerned.

Both Lan Zhan and Wei Ying took their teaching duties seriously, and would never skip classes, unless…unless something was wrong.

"Yes, I checked with those on night duty yesterday, and they reported all four cultivators had returned successfully, only minor injuries to the young ones. As far as they knew, no one was hurt badly." The disciple bowed again.

"Then, while I go and check in the Jingshi, please locate the juniors who went with them last night and bring them to me." XiChen walked him to the door where they parted ways.

He hurried towards the Jingshi, and when he got there, he took in all the small details that made it appear as normal.

It was as picturesque as the first time he had come here, to visit his mother.

The little blue gentian flowers were still bobbing their heads delicately at him, and inquisitive bumble bees were still dancing among the petals. The soft fragrance of Sandalwood wafting towards him was comforting and infused with warmth.

The door was shut as usual, and nothing seemed out of place.

XiChen smiled, feeling happy that this house had become a home to his younger brother and his husband, and this marriage had given him two younger brothers to look after now. There was a different kind of warmth about the place now, welcoming and prosperous.

He knocked on the door because everyone in Cloud Recesses knew by now; one should  never blindly walk into a space that should have Hanguang-Jun and Wei WuXian together in there, unannounced

There was no answer.

At the very least, if they truly were inside, then there should be some kind of noises, of them stopping Papapa- or whatever they were doing and showing some decorum.

But there was nothing.

XiChen paused and covered his eyes as a safety hazard before pushing the door open.

Still only silence.

XiChen looks around, watching dust notes floating in the midday rays of yellow sunshine flowing through the large round window. Faint traces of magnolias perfume the air, making it smell sweet like vintage wine, and then his gaze lands on the bed, where the shape of a person is outlined under the cool white sheet

But there's something odd about it…it seems like it is one person, and yet there are two distinct lumps in the centre of the bed.

XiChen creeps forward slowly, wondering why he felt so on edge, when this was a familiar room, and the task of awakening his brother is not a new one, and still, the goosebumps on his arms only grow more prominent.

He reaches the edge of the low bed, and his fingers grasp the edges of the sheet, carefully he pulls it back and gasps.

There are two children wrapped around each other in a puddle of white silk, gently sleeping. The one on the left is sucking his thumb now and again, his big eyes shut for now, lashes curling on his round cheeks flushed with slumber, his cute button nose scrunched up for some reason. He looks to be about three years old.
