Wilbur sighed, glancing at the oven.
The cookies Niki made were in there, hopefully heating up. If Fundy got cookies, Wilbur could probably catch a moment of peace.
He frowned. He was, technically, having peace.
But.. the kind of peace where it's quiet and you don't know if your kid is okay.
A sharp 'beep! beep! beep!' jolted Wilbur out of his thoughts.
"Cookies?" He asked to no one, looking at the clock.
"Oh-" Wilbur looked at the time. "Oh shit."
Fundy was going to arrive home soon from his first day of third grade, and even though their house was like 5 houses down from the bus stop, Wilbur thought he should go get him.
But.. cookies...
Suddenly the front door unlocked, making Wilbur jump and point the nearest thing he could grab, a whisk, at the door.
"Oh, it's just you, Fundy!" Wilbur smiled.
Fundy said nothing and dropped his backpack onto the floor. He stalked off to his small room and shut the door.
"Ah." Wilbur winced. "The anxiety is kicking in."
(my motto /hj)
He walked over to Fundys door and knocked softly. "You alright?"
A muffled response came from the other side of the door, and it opened a crack.
"What's up, buddy?" Wilbur crouched down to Fundys height.
The boy had tears in his eyes that were threatening to spill, and his hair was all ruffled. His usually sparkling eyes were damp and sad.
"D-dad?" The one word in that tone made Wilburs heart break. "You said the teacher is always right, right?"
"Yes.." Wilbur opened the door secretly by an inch, but Fundy didn't notice.
"So I'm a girl?" Fundy sniffled.
Wilburs eyes widened. "Oh, champion, no!" He sat down on the floor and pulled Fundy close, hugging him tight. "What made you think that?"
Fundy wiped his eyes on his sleeve, sniffling. "But you s-said the teacher is always r-right."
"Um.. elaborate?" Wilbur said awkwardly. "Explain more?"
"I.." Fundy took a deep breath in. "I went to my class and our teacher made us introduce us, and it was my turn an-and I said 'My name is Fundy and I'm a boy' a-and the teacher said 'no you are a girl' and I-I said no, and then she- she gave me a bad grade, and now I'm in trouble, and now they call me girl names and teacher is making me wear a bow for the i-introduce show and I.." Fundy sobbed "I don't wanna be a girl! I'm not supposed to be a girl!"
Wilbur froze, piecing the news together. Then he hugged Fundy in a big soft hug, and wiped his tears.
"Hey, it's okay, if you're not a girl then you're not a girl, okay?" Wilbur said softly.
"B-but.. teacher is always right.." Fundy mumbled.
"Well.. Dad didn't mean that kind of right. If the teacher says you are a girl when you are a boy, that is a bad teacher and you should not listen to them." Wilbur explained, trying not to use too big words.
"So I don't have to wear a bow?" Fundy asked hopefully.
"Of course not." Wilbur said, smiling. "Now, want some cookies from Niki?"
Fundy perked up. "Aunt Niki cookies?!"
"She's not your au- ah, sure. Aunt Niki cookies. Let's get you some Aunt Niki cookies, champion."
