Pier started to rummage through the books in the library of the central mansion.
"Sovereign of darkness?" He asked himself while shivering from the cold.
There was no one in the place and everyone had retired to their homes already. However, the young master was looking through a pile of books trying to look for the things he had heard from the vampire prince.
"What's a sovereign of darkness?" He did not know what Ciaran meant by that.
"Master... kurkh..." He also looked back when he heard the ghastly voice of the small dead fairy following him.
"Come to think of it..." He trailed off as he remembered a specific line.
'I am Melfar, the sovereign of the southern skies!'
He thought about the time when he became the phoenix's guardian and it told him the flaming bird was a sovereign.
There was so much confusion running through his head as Pier continued to look through the books.
"Hey, what's your name?" He asked while flipping a book open.
The dead fairy tilted its head to the side and Pier grimaced when it gave off a cracking sound. The fairy was small enough to fit in his palms but he was cautious of it.
Far from the dazzling and beautiful appearance of fairies, this one was already dead and was following him around.
"... d-don't... have... name..." It spoke slowly and Pier nodded his head in acknowledgement.
"Let's finish researching about what's a sovereign first." He concluded while opening another book.
"Melfar?" He called to the empty room and he heard a faint voice in his ear.
"You called, guardian?"
"What is a sovereign?" Pier asked. He was skimming through some texts hoping to do his research about it but of course, the best way was to ask another sovereign itself.
"Sovereigns are the highest and most powerful beings of their kind." It responded curtly but Pier wasn't satisfied with it.
"Can you elaborate it further?" He asked and he saw that the dead fairy that had a gruesome appearance was now sitting on his shoulder as if it was a small guy taking the time of the world.
"To put it simply, I am the sovereign of the southern skies. No creature that roams the same area is stronger than me. It goes the same with your vampire." The mythical creature explained and Pier's eyebrows rose in bewilderment.
"My vampire?"
"That candidate was giving you his newest and currently most powerful shadow, guardian. I do not know how human affections work but seeing how he gave one to you means he treasures you enough."
Pier kept silent when he was now able to comprehend a bit of it.
"But why is there a candidate?"
"Candidates are made when there are many contenders to be the sovereign. The darkness itself is almost endless and many creatures come from it. Vampires, lycanthropes, werewolves, ghouls, banshees, basilisks, gargoyles, and many other else are a part of darkness. That is why there are candidates."
"I see... so Ciaran is a candidate, I assume?"
"That is correct. The vampire prince that follows you around ceaselessly became a candidate once he absorbed all of the monster souls in the Mir Mountains. I'm quite impressed, actually." The phoenix spoke and Pier was left with an amused look.
