chapter 45: not today

After the most anticlimactic first half of my first day of UA, we're dismissed to lunch.

I'm starting to wonder when things are gonna get exciting. So far, this field trip has been nothing but stressful and boring. What the hell was up with that 'quirk apprehension test'? I thought this school was supposed to be prestigious! I was expecting at least a little bit of a challenge from this place. I wanna take my quirk to the limit! Put my hand to hand combat skills to the test! Not see who can step side to side the fastest like we're in a high school gym class.

I make a pit stop at the bathroom to take a picture in the mirror for Shiggy, since he didn't get to see me in my uniform this morning. It's gotta be some kind of sexual fantasy of his to get with a wannabe hero, right? Either way, I look adorable, and he's gonna love it.

It takes me a while to find the cafeteria after that, and I'm just about the last person to get my food from the lunch line. When I'm finally ready to sit down and eat, I scan the tables for any possible place I can sit, with no avail.

Not wanting to look like a total reject by walking around aimlessly searching for a space to squeeze in, I head for the empty hallway.

I'll just eat in the bathroom, just like old times. At least I won't have to worry about anyone bombarding me with questions in there.

But just as I turn the corner to make it to my private dining area, I bump into someone coming from the other side. I nearly drop my tray, but I manage to save it just in time.

"Whoa there, kid," says the guy who almost made me lose my lunch. A teacher, I'm assuming. With a hairdo like that, wearing sunglasses indoors, the guy's got pro hero written all over him.

"Sorry," I mutter, then step around him to get back to where I was going.

"Wait, where are you going with that?" he says, referring to the tray of cafeteria food in my hands.

I stop in my tracks. "Um..." I say as I slowly turn around, trying my hardest to think of an answer that doesn't make me sound like a total freak.

"Were you gonna eat in the bathroom?" he asks.

   Shit.

"I didn't know where to sit," I reply.

He smiles sympathetically. "Oh, come on, buster. We can't have you eating alone in a bathroom stall, kids at this school are gross! Why don't you come eat in my classroom? Just for today."

Not knowing how to say that I'd rather die than do that, I nod, biting the inside of my cheek.

This couldn't be worse. How embarrassing! This guy is gonna think I'm a total loser! Eating alone in the classroom of a teacher who I don't even know? Pathetic.

"First year, huh?" he asks as we walk down the hall.

   "Yeah."

   "What class are you in?"

"1A."

"1A? Ah, so you're with Shota."

   "Aizawa?"

"Yeah. What's your name, little lady?"

"Um..." I can feel beads of sweat forming on my forehead.

Fuck. I haven't had any time to prepare.

   "K-Kai..."

"Kai? That's short for Kaiya, right?"

I nod, breathing a sigh of relief.

"So you're the teleporting one!"

Even in this situation, I can't help but smile.

The teleporting one. So even the teachers talk about me, huh? Reveling about my grandeur, even though they only know a sliver of my power? I love it. This attention, it really gets me going. I'd like to see the look on his face if I told him what I'm truly capable of.

"That's me," I say, with a sudden boost of confidence.

"Well, here we are," he says, stopping at the doorway to an empty classroom. "I gotta be somewhere, so choose a desk, and I'll see you around."

"Thanks," I say, and with a friendly pat of my shoulder, he leaves.

That guy's actually not so bad, for a pro hero at least.

I slide into a seat on the front row, and take out my phone to see if Shiggy got my picture.

   -You look adorable, schoolgirl

-thanks :p

-How's your first day going, kitten?

-pretty good, i introduced myself without fucking up lol

-Nice! What are you doing now?

-eating lunch in an empty classroom like a reject

   -Empty classroom?

-yea, i was gonna eat in the bathroom but a teacher said i can eat here

-Why would you eat in the bathroom?

   -idk
-nervous to talk to people ig
-and there was nowhere to sit so

-And you're completely alone in the classroom?

   -yea
   -y

-See if you can get your hands on a schedule.

Oh, right. I forgot there's a mission supposed to be going on here.

-wait fr? that's sketch. what if he comes back

   -Glitch away.

-i mean ig i can try
-but if i get caught im blaming u

   -Go ahead.

Before I can second guess myself, I beam over to the teachers desk, and start to search for anything that resembles a schedule. I'm careful not to make it completely obvious that someone has rifled through all his things, but I have no luck finding anything useful.

I beam back to the desk as soon as possible, heart beating out of my chest, and pull out my phone.

   -no schedule

   -How hard did you look?

-there was only like 4 papers on the desk and nothing in the drawers. there's probably a schedule in the principals office or something but idk how i'd get to that

-We'll find a way. Eat your lunch.

   -okie :3

   -<3

But just before I can take my first bite, the dismissal bell rings.
