Chapter 39 - ICU

Casey paced up and down the hospital waiting room. Hailey walked in
"How is she?" She asked
"They've not told me anything, do you know who did it?" Casey asked
"Uhm we know it was Scott, he left an item of clothing at the scene. However we spoke to his parole officer and she hasn't been in contact with Scott for over a week now" Hailey explained as she sat down
"Where is he then?" Casey asked
"We're not sure, we've got airports on lockdown so he can't leave the state" Hailey explained as Dr.Halstead walked out
"Will?" Hailey asked
"She's stable. We rushed her into emergency surgery to control a bleed on her brain. We think we stopped it but the thing with head injuries is that it's a literal waiting game" Will said
"But she'll recover right?" Casey asked
"It's too early to tell" Will said as his pager went off and he ran back in
"It's Addy's birthday tomorrow" Hailey said
"I know, Cara had presents picked out" Casey said
"How is she?" Kelly asked as he walked in along with the rest of 51
"She had surgery but they don't know if she's going to make it" Casey explained
"Why don't you go home? You've been on all night" Kelly suggested
"I'm not leaving her" Casey said
"Copy that" Kelly said

It's the next morning and Casey has finally been allowed in to see Cara. He sits by her bedside and takes her hand
"You scared me, don't ever do that again" He smiled
Cara lay there, hooked up to all these machines
"It's Addys birthday today. She's 1! Can you believe that! I know you had some things picked out for her but I'm sure you can replace them. Just focus on getting better for me" Casey smiled
Kevin then walked in with Addy in his hands
"What are you doing here?" Casey asked
"I know hospitals aren't a place for kids but I thought Addy should see her mom on her birthday" Kevin explained
"She had some things picked out but I'm sure the fire destroyed them" Casey said as Kevin walked over to Cara
"I get it, Hey look Addy! It's Mom!" Kevin smiled as Addy giggled
"Your great with her" Casey said
"Hey I try to be" Kevin smiled
"Cara would really appreciate this, Thank you" Casey said
"Every kid deserves to see their mom" Kevin said

The day went by slowly, nurses coming in and out, hour after hour. People coming to visit Cara and to console Casey. Kelly then walked in
"I don't get it" Kelly said
"What?" Casey said as he looked up
"You've spent all night with her, not left her side once. Risked your life in a fire for her. Pulled your alderman strings for her kid. Why are you doing this?" Kelly asked
"Do you remember that night I called you, I told you that something clicked on my brain. Do you remember what it was?" Casey asked, looking at Cara
"Yeah you were in Love with Gabby" Kelly said as he realised something
"Well I think something just clicked" Casey said as Kelly smiled
"So your saying-" Kelly said
"I'm in love with Cara" Casey smiled
