(Undyne's POV)
"Come on, punk! Get it into gear!" I yelled at Develyn. "You wanna WIN, don't you!?"
Develyn ran faster on the treadmill, with a grimly determined expression on his face. "Course I wanna win!" He retorted. "This is the 5K run, after all!"
So for those of you who need context, the mayor of Ebbot City organized a 5K charity run to support the opening of a school for training humans in the magical arts from long ago. Apparently, there was some knowledge that had been thought lost to time but was recently unearthed regarding human SOULs and magic. Apparently, the red SOUL didn't signify Determination, but rather, something else: Love. And if you wanna know when that came up, it'll probably be explained in a future chapter, so BE PATIENT!
Basically, the school will have mentors who guide humans on using their magic, should they have a strong affinity for it. Some mentors will be monsters, others human, and all that jazz. I don't just mean the magic of the traits, which apparently, humans aren't limited to. They can also harness the elements, like fire, water, earth, air, ice, lightning, light, shadow, metal... Cool, right?
But back to the present. "Alright, break time!" I said to Develyn. "We'll get back to training when you've rested a bit."
The treadmill slowed down and stopped, and Dev hopped off. He took a long drink of water from his water bottle, swallowing the cool, refreshing liquid with relief. His hair was soaked with sweat, so I tossed him a towel. So far, we'd done lunges, squats, and we'd even used that one machine where you push a bunch of weights with your legs. Basically, it was Leg Day.
"Well," Dev said after his drink and a rub-down with the towel, "you weren't joking about this training 'not being for wimps.' I'm exhausted, and that's saying something."
I sighed. "Well, in that case, you'd better head home and hit the showers," I responded. "Hope that training helps you out a bit."
Develyn nodded. "Thanks a lot for your help," he said. "I really appreciate it."
"You're welcome," I replied. "But if you lose, punk, so help me, you'll be doing wind sprints until you puke!"
(Aria's POV, Race Day)
"Welcome, people of Ebbot City!" The emcee said called out. "Are you ready for a race of a lifetime?"
Everyone cheered, including me. I was so excited to hear that Dev was competing in the 5K that we all decided to come see it in person.
"You'll win this, Develyn!" Toriel whooped.
Noelle looked at Asriel. "You cheering for Develyn?" She asked.
"You bet!" Azzy replied. "He's a master runner, so I know he'll win!"
"This race is held to sponsor the construction of a School of Magic, which we very well may need, as more humans are showing signs of magical affinity! This school will teach humans how to use their magic, starting with the basics, and moving on to more complex theories and abilities. But first, I'd like to give a warm welcome to the Dreemurr Family, who are here watching over the race!"
Everybody cheered for us, which made me feel a bit self-conscious.
"Don't worry, Aria," Chara said. "I've been in your place."
The emcee listed off the participants one by one, and then came to Dev. "Develyn came all the way from Iceland to live here, and he's the boyfriend of our very own Ambassador of Monsters, Frisk Dreemurr!" After that, he listed off the remaining participants. There were 10 runners total, and Dev was number 8, as his jersey said.
The referee held up the airhorn. "Runners, to your marks!" He said. Everyone got to their positions.
"Ready? Get set..."
Then the airhorn blared, and the runners took off!
"Go Vel!" Frisk cheered, holding up a foam finger she had made for the event. "You can do it!"
Everyone cheered for their favorite runner, and the competition was intense. 9 was pulling forward, but 3 lagged a little bit behind the group. Develyn was going a steady pace, hanging in 4th place.
The cheers were so loud and overpowering, I couldn't not be caught up in the excitement! I cheered for Develyn loudly. "Come on! You've got this!"
After a while, near the end of the race, most of the other runners began losing speed, but Develyn must've been saving his energy for the end, because he broke into a full-on sprint! He raced ahead of the other runners, careening straight towards the finish line.
"Go for it!" Chara shouted. "Full speed! Full speed!"
A couple of other runners, who'd been saving their energy, tried to catch up to Dev, but he'd been training for this moment, and he soon crossed the finish line, first to complete the 5-kilometer run! Everyone cheered, especially our family and Develyn's family. Asriel and Asgore ran out and hoisted the winner onto their shoulders. Man, Goatbro and Goat Dad are strong!
(Frisk's POV)
At the awards ceremony, the mayor placed medals around the top three. The runner in third place, a young woman with a slender frame red hair, and freckles received a bronze medal. The runner-up (pun intended), a guy who looked like a surfer dude with a visible tan, sunglasses, and shaggy blonde hair, was handed a silver medal. Finally, Vel, the winner of the race, was presented with a gold medal, which the mayor placed around his neck.
"Thank you all for coming!" He said, and everyone cheered.
When the crowd cleared, Asgore, Toriel and I talked to the mayor while Asriel took the others home.
"The turnout was a huge success!" The mayor said. "Thanks to everyone who came, we can finally construct that magic school!"
"I'm so happy to help out the humans in this city," Toriel responded. "Finally, they will be able to learn the fundamentals of magic!"
"And not a moment too soon," Asgore agreed. "The humans have been needing this."
The mayor nodded, then turned to Toriel again. "I have one more favor to ask of you," he said.
"If there is anything more I can do to help, I'd be happy to oblige," Toriel consented.
"Asgore told me you'd always dreamed of being a teacher, and you've been doing that at one of our primary schools," the mayor said. "But you're also well-versed in magic. Once the mage school is completed, I'd love to have you as one of our instructors."
Toriel seemed taken aback by surprise. "Me?" She repeated. "A magic instructor? I... I'm not sure I should—"
"Come on, Tori!" Asgore said. "Think of how happy the students—kids, most likely—would be to have you teach them! Besides, you're the brains of the family, so it shouldn't be too difficult."
I looked at Toriel. "You'd be awesome at it!" I agreed. "Please, Mom?"
Toriel closed her eyes in thought. When she opened them, she was smiling. "Alright," said Goat Mom. "Once the school is finished, I will be one of its instructors."
The mayor smiled, and shook her hand warmly. "Thank you," he said. "I promise, you'll do wonderfully."
And with that, we said our goodbyes and went on our way home.
