Wangji and Xichen stood in front of the front door, standing still for about a minute after they arrive at the Lan's villa. Staring at the massive door that they are hesitating to open for more than a minute, and preparing themselves for the possible reason as to why their uncle called for a dinner. Could it be an outburst of lectures of this and that, and how to live a life like a dominant alpha with a high expectation? Or even throw insults about the people they chose to be with?

Whatever it is, they need to prepare themselves. They need to toughen up their patience and not throw a punch at any insulting words that are possible to be thrown at them.

Xichen smiles at his brother's hesitating stature, then reaches to pat his back.

Lan Zhan turned his head at him after feeling the older's reassuring pat and gave him a tight-lipped smile with a nod.

"We'll be fine," Xichen assures.

Lan Zhan sighs, "yeah," he answers and reached for the knob.

The door then opened, creaking in the process. Upon opening, servants of the house welcomed them, bowing and gesturing their hands in the direction of the dining hall.

The two brothers looked around. The house hasn't changed a bit, furnitures are still in the same places, the servants are the same faces and the ambiance still feels gloomy and empty despite the presence of multiple servants around.

The travel to the dining hall feels longer than normal even if it was just next to the living room. Every step feels heavy to the feet, their hearts ready yet not ready for the presence of the older alpha in the same room as them.

Finally, after the painstaking walk to the dining hall, they arrived. The door was wide open to welcome them. And at the center seat where their eyes immediately set upon, sitting their uncle whose eyes immediately fell on them when he heard their footsteps.

"Wangji, Xichen..." he utters, eyes glinting in hope. It was not obvious but he's glad they showed up even after he became an asshole (he's aware of that now) the last time they had dinner. And now is the time to change for the better.

The two stood quietly at the door, eyes cold as they look at the cursed room they hated to sit at because of the insults and lectures they have endured for the past years.

Qiren sighs when he notices his nephews' hesitation, a sad smile left his lips as he composes himself. He really did a terrible impression on his nephews that they hesitate to enter the dining hall.

"Please join me," he mutters softly in the hopes of his nephews to loosen up a little, far from the stone-hard tone he used to speak.

The two were stunned but they managed to hide it. It was new to their ears, something they never heard from the older before. But they oblige anyway after being given the cue, and they stride their way to their own seats.

"I'm glad you came," the older uttered something that the two find surprising.

How, when, or what happened during the days they have not talked to the older? Why is he suddenly showing emotions he has not given to them before?

Qiren looks more relaxed now. The frown that was always plastered on his forehead is laid flat, no signs of snapping any minute.

The two kept quiet, though observing the calm tone of the older, they needed to stay watchful. What if it was just a face?

The older clears his throat after not hearing any replies from the two. Guess it was a given since he'd been strict with them for a long time. Now that he takes account of his nephews' every move and reaction, he notices how much effect he had done to them. He realized he was too insensitive back then, too self-centered that he didn't notice the uncomfortable feeling between the two.
