Trigger warning ahead

It had always shocked her how quickly things change. One minute someone's your friend, then they're not. One minute there's a house standing, and the next, it's a pile of rubble. On minute you're so sure of everything and the next it's all ripped away from you.
Hadn't she been through enough? She was always second place in her parents' eyes, she was stalked relentlessly in high school, she had been sentenced to a week in the nut house because she thought her boyfriend was the devil, and she had lost one of her dearest friends as well as her sister.
And now, she had lost the most precious thing in her life.
Toby had driven at least twenty miles over the speed limit the entire way to Madison. Spencer refused to call an ambulance, that would ensure separation from her doting husband. And upon arriving at the hospital, her worst fear had been realized.
She would soon be giving birth to a premature, stillborn baby.
She was too numb, emotionally and physically, to cry during the induced labor. She simply did what the doctor directed, trying not to break down.
On the other hand, Toby was struggling even more. Although he was strong, his emotions always took the forefront. He didn't dare look at his wife's face, but Spencer was well aware of the tears seeping into her hospital gown and the trembling of his hand as it clutched hers.
After it was all over and the doctors had run their tests and apologized for the whole ordeal, Spencer was beyond exhausted. No words were spoken between the couple as Toby squeezed into the hospital bed beside her.
The tears came eventually, however. Spencer's quiet sobs woke Toby from his fitful sleep at around one. When he closed his arms around her and she was facing him, he became aware that she was muttering one syllable over and over.
"Why?"
At the realization of what she had said, Toby's tears began again, and Spencer's only fell harder. The two of them held each other closer than they had ever imagined, desperate to live in their old lives.
Because, really, anyone could see that nothing would ever be the same.

So I came really close to tears in writing this. I promise things will get better. Please please please don't hate me and keep reading. It will be a struggle, but Toby and Spencer will get through it together. I hope I did a good enough job of explaining everything, feel free to message me any questions or comments, as I want to make sure I'm doing justice to the tragic topic. Thank you endlessly to all of my amazing readers. I seriously love you guys to death.
