"60 seconds" speaking through the coms radio, your eyes dropped directly to the timer. Your fingers tapping the panel rhythmically as your nerves were out of whack.
"Affirmative, all clear" A familiar voice responded back.
Reggie or as anyone else would call him, Reginald Parker.
Your neighboring Artillery and Missiles Officer, who also happens to be your best friend who you worked with.
He was out on the testing field waiting for the launch of a new missile you were both in the process of creating. Breaking your intent stare from the timer up to the panel's screen, a heavy weight of anxiousness filled your chest.
Weighing it down heavily, making it harder to inhale.
"Launching in 5, stand by." You spoke, letting go of the radio button quickly.
You mentally counted down,
Your eyes quickly shot up to the screen that laid eye level to you, watching the target circle intently. Your foot tapped against the cold, metal floor beneath you. "Come on...come on..." you mumbled, your patience was wearing thin.
"3..2..1.."
Quickly the missile collided into the target circle exploding heavily on impact with the radius of 3 football fields. A large green array of words plastered the screen.
Target destroyed
"YES." You jumping with excitement, pumping your fist at the sight on the screen.
"Bullseye baby!" Reggie's voice boomed through the coms. You scoffed with a wide smile, leaning into the coms to respond.
"Fucking perfecto." You replied, still in shock this missile had worked on its first take. "That's enough for today. Let's end it on that note." You rounded the conversation through coms just as the door behind you riddled a loud knock. The sound of the door click caused you to turn your body to meet the face that was entering.
A lower division Artillery soldier.
"General Shepard wants you in his office, it's urgent." The soldier spoke quickly before parting from the doorway disappearing out of sight. You furrowed your brow somewhat confused.
Why Shepard would want you in his office?
He was never one to tell you things himself, always had the lower ranks relay the messages. You made sure everything was off and secure before exiting the operating room.
Your boots clicked through the thin hall drowning your ears from the silence that filled around you.
Were you in trouble? Everything went accordingly today as promised?
After a few turns down some elongating hallways, you paused your steps in front of the large door now in front of you.
You knocked on the door that separated you from Shepard. You heard the distinct chatter behind the door simmer down to silence.
"Enter!" Shepard's voice almost immediately corroded the silence. Grabbing the door handle, you slowly pushed it open to now see the face to the voice.
Captain John Price standing next to Shepard's Desk
"Sir" you spoke nodding your head towards General Shepard. "Good morning Captain, always a pleasure to see you here." You smiled lightly, turning your attention back to the General.
"Please sit." Shepard spoke motioning his hand towards the open seat on the opposing side of where he stood. You walked up to the front of the chair, quickly taking a seat. Silence ran laps around the room until Shepard finally spoke.
"Your recent shipment of ATS missiles that were intended to be delivered to Fort Hood never made it." Your heart dropped into your ass the minute words processed in your mind. That was a shipment of missiles you sent out 3 weeks prior.
" I don't understand sir." You quickly spoke, feeling your heart beat rapidly in your chest. "I-" you tried to continue but Captain Price chimed in.
"The trackers you put in them have been removed and have located just outside of Gyumri, Armenia. Some type of arms deal with Russia "
"I'm unsure how they manage to remove the trackers? They're meant to self detonate if even the smallest wire is meddled with."
"Our missiles are in their grasp, we are in a grave amount of danger, soldier." Shepard barked sternly.
"The captain here has asked me if I could spare one of my best artillerymen with the knowledge of these missiles"
"that's where you come in. I need you to accompany Task Force 141 on locating these missiles. With the possibility of you disassembling the launch and target system. If necessary." Shepard spoke leaning forward on his desk. "Am I loud and clear? I need my missiles recovered way."
"Yes sir." You didn't hesitated, standing from your seated position. Some glances would be exchanged between Captain Price and the General.
"Perfect, gather your belongings, you're leaving here today. Rest of your duties will be released to Officer Parker. Don't let me down." Shepard concluded nodding his head. You took that as your sign to exit and get packing.
"I'll be here with Shepard until you're done." Price called just as you close the door behind you. You were in for a hell of a ride.
Never stepping foot into the frontlines of field, this would be the first. You were technical support, who worked in a warehouse not in the midst of the battle.
Grabbing a duffel of your uniform and extra clothing, you bid your room one more look leaving the life of a sheltered military personnel.
You closed your door turning to continue down the hall when a Reggie came into view.
"Running away?" He chuckled seeing your stuff duffel slumped over your shoulder.
"You'd be lost without me, I could never." You smirked, approaching Reggie. "But it does look like you'll be in charge of things here for a little while, think you can handle that?" You joked, nudging his shoulder softly. His hand flew over to land on his chest in offense.
"What? Think id I blow up the place?" He tilted his head, pushing his side into you. "Don't stress it, I got it covered." He ended it with a nod. "But hey no dying on me alright?" He cocked his head staring you directly in the eyes as a way to intimidate you to agree.
"No promises, Reg. " you rolled your eyes. "It goes both ways, asshat. You can't die on me either alright? No extreme measures with my babies in there." You pointed down the hall towards the door to the workroom that held the works of your newest missile.
"Alright alright" he laughed, pulling you in for a quick bear hug. "Get goin before you gotta drop and give them 100." He teased, moving aside continuing down the hall.
"See ya, bud."
You and Reggie went through bootcamp together, graduated together, ranked up together. Your platonic best friend all in one. He was as good with the missiles as you were, he just tended to second guess himself more often and because of that, General Shepard saw him beneath you.
You sure were going to miss your best friend.
You eventually made it back to Shepard's office where you appeared in the doorway and both gentlemen turned their attention towards you pausing their conversation for another time.
"Ready to be hauled away." You lightly joked as Price silently chuckled at your sentence.
"Got everything you need?" Price asked walking up to you in the doorway.
"Yes sir." You nodded, following the captain out of the office.
"You'll be in good hands with the boys." Price spoke as he approached the SUV first opening the door for you.
I sure hope so..
