heuningkai rushed through the eerily silent hallways, his breath wavering as he let out heavy pants and gasps, his mind rushing through countless thoughts all chanting the same thing what jaemin had called him for.

his best friend tried to commit suicide.

his eyes darted at the seemingly similar rooms until a certain door caught his attention. hesitation pulling his limbs back, yet he twisted the door handle, letting the wood swing open, only to see the lifeless body of jisung, along with his beloved hyungs, but that was not what caught his attention.

what really caught his attention was that jisung's beloved chenle...is back.

but at the worst timing ever.

hesitation pulling on his limbs again, heuningkai gave in, slowly traversing inside the room as he cannot believe that his best friend, who used to be one of the strongest people mentally even after what he went through, has now given up on life on a struggle that he could not power through anymore because his other half had literally been torn away from him.

but even if his other half came back, it was too late, and probably not going to be the same anyways. after all, a rope that's cut into half when tied up once again, will still have that knot of imperfection.

before heuningkai could say a single word, he felt tears staining his clothes as he felt a warmth covering his waist, buried on his shoulder blade. knowing clearly who exactly it was, heuningkai could not help but glance a melancholic look at chenle, who was crying in his arms.

"k-kai...w-what have i d-done..." chenle spoke out between his sobs filled with pure desperation as he buried his face onto the younger's chest, hoping to get some of the same warmth jisung showered him with before. "i-i...w-want him...b-back...b-but...what h-have i d-done..."

heuningkai ran down a hand onto the older's spine, in a last ditch effort to calm him down. lucky for him, it did work as chenle's sniffles died down, slowly moving away from his arms and flopping down next to jaemin, wrapping his arms around his arm in a vice-like grip. "hyung..." heuningkai started as he glanced at jaemin, trailing off as he did not want to address the situation anymore.

jaemin merely glanced at the younger, who looked like he was on the verge of insanity. sighing, he prepared himself to break the ice. "it's-"

jaemin was immediately cut off as the squeaking door swung open, revealing his cousin, who was awkwardly stealing glances with everyone, along with his daughter and a small newborn child in his arms, babbling feebly. "uh, i'm sorry for...suddenly barging in, but..." he trailed off as he approached chenle and handed the child over to him.

the whole place was in dead silence as a very broken chenle held his son in his arms, tears blurring his vision once again. immediately snapping into his senses, he turned to jisung and approached him, gathering all his words to confront him.

"j-ji...see this....i-it's our little baby..." chenle spoke out feebly as he glanced at jisung longingly, the latter not saying a single word as he would expect. "p-please...wake up...i-i can't l-leave...my family l-like this...please..."

and with that said, he broke down immediately, jaemin and his cousin immediately going to the younger's reach as jaemin immediately pulled chenle in a hug, letting him cry over his shoulder while jisung held the child in his arms, sighing quietly as he knew this feeling way more than anyone else could.

bae, who was quietly standing in the corner, heard everything and those scattered clues were more than enough for her to piece together on what was happening. the man on the bed covered with bandages is supposed to her uncle, her beloved aunt lele's husband. yet, her aunt stayed away from him for who knows what reason, and now...he ended up in the same way as her mother did.

bae knew, clearly knew that her dad was lying that her mom will come back. there was no doubt, she had listened to her dad's quiet sobs at midnight, missing wookjin bitterly.

it was a thunderclap to her nonetheless knowing that she might never see her mother ever in her life, but she tried her best to not show it in front of her dad, or the very least, insinuate that she kept believing in what her dad said.

now, her aunt is going through the same, traumatic feeling of being torn away from who he loved and cherished. granted, she never had seen this bandaged man in her whole life, but if he is so important to her aunt, it still leaves the same deep imprint on her mind.

bae glanced lifelessly at chenle, who was still crying in jaemin's arms, while the older tried to console his broken best friend. a keen eye could spot the same feeling of dread in jaemin's expression, for he was also shaken from the whole situation, almost losing someone whom he considered his own little brother.

composing herself, bae walked towards chenle, her fingers fidgetting nervously as she immediately crawled to his lap, wrapping her small hands around him as tightly as she could, closing her eyes shut as she heard chenle's cries falter and die down in confusion.

"aunt lele...it's alright, he'll be b-back...he won't leave us...like mom did..." bae's muffled voice spoke up as she tried her level best to not let her voice falter and break as she not-so-subtly mentioned her mother's passing. "uncle ji will be back...just hold on, aunt lele..."

chenle's frame immediately perked up as he glanced at the child with wide eyes, a small slight happiness bubbling up inside him as he realized what exactly she spoke out. "uncle ji...?" he queried albeit hesitantly.

"yeah...uncle ji will come back, or else i will make him come back! i hadn't seen him yet..." bae spoke up happily, hope lacing her voice that made chenle smile after it felt like it had been hours of crying.

chenle glanced back at jisung, well, the younger jisung to be exact, praying for him internally as a few of his almost-impossible fantasies of them being an actual married couple forming subtle mental images in his mind.

what happens with jisung, is only now fate could handle, and chenle hoped fate would turn a better course to be the final light at the end of the tunnel.

a/n: this is probably the second weirdest chapter i've ever wrote, because the first place definitely goes to that botched threesome i wrote lmao. the exposition sucks, and it's mainly because my mind is fogging up because of too much stress and shit.

hell, i can't even sit down and calm down for a moment because of shitty exams. i have to cram my head with shit that i won't probably ever use afterwards.

also, next chapter's going to be about a week later the incident. i did my research, shit's going to take a while anyways. the depressing stage ain't over yet, folks.

...istg if this fic is over a hundred chapters, just forehead flick me on the face, this is the most boring shit i've ever wrote.
