The truth of the matter was that you've always been afraid of what might happen to your sanity after leaving the toxic relationship you were trapped in, on and off, for ten years of your life. Most of your twenties were lost in what you believed was the relationship you were going to build your future on. Oh! How wrong you were!
Y/n, a thirty four year old, successful business woman, in charge of the logistics department of one of the most prominent online sales sites in the western hemisphere based in Silicon Valley, had come from a small country in Latin America after winning a scholarship to get her MBA at one of the top schools in the west coast.
It had been a slow and tiring journey that began when she was twenty two, but after working hard at school and graduating as valedictorian of her class, she was offered a job and a work visa -which eventually turned to a permanent residence and then, citizenship-. But what she never saw coming, not in a million years, was the company offering her a position in their overseas office. The South Korea branch.
"Y/n, y/n baby, don't tell me you're seriously thinking of turning this down!", Lena, your bestie since grad school and your best supporter said as she filled up your wine glass and handed you a smoke, "it's the opportunity of a lifetime and you deserve it, God knows you do, you work your ass off every day and after everything that happened with-"
"Woah! Stop right there, fight club, remember?" You interrupted her as you lit up your cigarette and took a long drag. You had almost completely quit smoking, nowadays you only did it when your stress levels went through the roof and the possibility of upending your life…well, you needed a smoke.
"Sorry," Lena said sheepishly, "I know, we don't talk about fight club, we don't talk about the asshole," you nodded and grinned, clinking your glass with her and taking a big gulp of your favorite sirah. "But seriously babe, what do you have to lose?"
Sighing, taking a puff and ever so sluggishly, leaning back on your chair, you said, "everything."
Lena gave you a look, the one you knew came accompanied with a talking to. "No, no, hear me out", you began as you took yet another sip, "I am grateful and honored, don't get me wrong, I mean, who would've thought that the third worlder would make it big? Certainly nobody we went to school with, and while it is true that I am very good at what I do, moving east scares the shit out of me."
"But, why?" The waitress came and placed the charcuterie board you ordered in between the both of you and cleared some of the empty plates. You nodded your thanks. "You love South Korea! You've gone there multiple times for work and for pleasure, girl, you have an unhealthy obsession with k-pop, don't even lie about it." The way Lena laughed was enough to make you laugh like a hyena.
"Shh! You'll get us kicked out. People will think you're drunk…well, drunker than you are." The cranberry compote was decadent and paired with some serrano ham, heaven. "Well, yes, I am obsessed with k-pop, you know that it was BTS that got me out of fight club and God knows those seven men are yummy as fuck, but be real, I'm older than all of them and it's not like they casually walk around the streets of Seoul looking for friends."
You shook your head, took a deep breath and continued your rant. "Besides, the little korean I can actually speak won't get me anywhere. The company's translator won't be with me 24/7. It's a ten hour flight from here to Incheon, what if something happens back home? Hu? I would need to fly ten hours back here, then another four to Houston and another four home. It's not plausible."
"You're just making lame excuses and you know it. You know your family will practically put you on the plane the second you tell them, it's not your job to take care of them. You can rent out your apartment here, let it pay for itself and give you some extra income each month. Babe, it's a three year project and after that, they're guaranteeing you'll have your job here back, they're putting it on paper."
"But, what if-" Lena shushed you, actually shushed you, "What if, is a stupid and dangerous game. Sleep on it. Better yet, drink," she said opening the third bottle of wine, "and then sleep on it. You better enjoy this wine while you can, because soon you'll be drowning in soju and beer."
You both laughed and drank, but deep down you knew…You were moving to Seoul.
