Emma's POV
"So, why are we decorating the marketplace?" I yelled to Clay on the ladder. "Courtney said that the welcome committee is short staffed and needed our help" he yelled back. He's wrapping lights on a tree. I'm holding the ladder to reassure him. I looked over and saw Carter on a ladder doing the same thing. She's across the market. She's smiling down at someone. I peeked over the crowd and saw Tony's fox ears. "Hey Clay! Look!" I said. He looked over. "Love birds! Cool. Now help me down" he said. I held the ladder firm as he stepped down. "Thanks. Doesn't that hurt to watch?" He asked. "No. It was my idea to break up. If she can be happy with Tony then I support it" I said. "You're too good of a friend" he said. "Thank you" I said. "I'm only looking forward to Tony leaving because I get the room to myself. Dude wags his tail in his sleep so all I hear is the thumping" he said. I laughed. Word has spread that Tony's leaving. Carter is the only one that doesn't know. "Come on, we gotta go get more lights" I said. "We should have volunteered for wreath hanging instead" he groaned. "If you're gonna be such a whiny brat then Ill go up the ladder instead" I said. "Good. Cause I don't like hanging Christmas lights. Its so annoying" he said. "Damn, ok scrooge" I said. "You have no idea. My mom used to make us all go caroling. I hated it" he said. "Are you a good singer?" I asked. "No. That's why I played guitar. So my family could sing to the tune" he said. "I doubt you're a bad singer" I said. "My mom said I was. That's why I wasnt aloud to sing at Christmas" he said. "Your mom sucks" I said. "Yes she does" he said. "You should go talk to Siren. Maybe you can play a tune for her. Doesn't her magic boost when music plays around her?" I asked. "Yes, but if she sings enough then she can create music herself" he said. "So give her a head start" I said. "Id rather hang myself. I mean the lights" he said. I laughed again and shook my head.I'm carrying empty light rolls back to the committee. Joker dropped in front of me and Courtney. "Your lookout is here to report that the griffins are on their way" she said. Courtney and I looked at each other. "Ill go with Joker. You round up the rest of the team" Courtney said. "Oh no need." Joker said. Joker snapped her fingers and the whole team, plus us, got teleported to the field. "What the hell just happened?" Oliver asked. "Babe. I told you. No magic without consent" Siren said. "Sorry, but Carter said that if the griffins showed up to get everyone here quickly. Is that not what I did?" Joker asked. "Its fine Siren. Thank you Joker. We're gonna need Joey for this next part" Carter said. Joker twitched her ears and changed back to Joey. She looked around. "Why are we here?" She asked. "Because of that" Noah pointed up at the griffins. "Stephanie" Carter said. Stephanie held out her hands and the griffins flew down our way. "What is she doing?" I asked. "Creating a wind current" Courtney said. The griffins started landing in the field. "Make sure they don't leave this field. We have to do a head count" Carter said. We started to head around the perimeter. As they landed, I got more and more fascinated by the creatures in front of me. They're really cool. "How are we supposed to do a head count?" I asked. Carter shrugged. "I got it!" Joey yelled. A griffin took off into the sky with Joey on its back. My jaw dropped. She counted all the griffins, plus hers, and then flew back down. "Guys, meet Corral. She's my griffin" Joey said. "Awesome" I said. "And there's forty six" Joey said, looking at Carter. "How do they name themselves?" I asked. "They draw it in the dirt. They're very smart" Joey said. "I never got a griffin. I'm not one for pets" Tony said. "I have one" Carter said. "Seriously?" I asked shocked. "Mhm. It wasnt intentional. He just kinda... clung onto me" Carter said. "Call him. I gotta see this" Joey said. Carter sighed. "Yo Fucker!" She yelled. "The hell?" I asked. "Trust me" Carter said. A smaller griffin then Joeys ran in and jumped onto Carter. His front claws wrapped around her shoulders so he was practically hugging her. "Hi Rat Tail" she said. "Rat Tail?" We asked. "That's his name" Carter said. "He's a teenager. Ironic" Joey said. "Yeah. He's... something" Carter said. Joey looked at me and the others. "Go see them. They like to interact!" Joey said. Joey pulled Siren onto Corral and took off.
I walked through the group and watched the griffins do their thing. This is so cool. A soft surface hit my back and I turned to be met with the most intense eye contact ever. Didn't think Id be intimidated by a griffin but here we are. I just stared at him as he looked down and clawed at the dirt. "What are you... oh god" I said. He's writing his name. It says Raddix. "Hi Raddix" I said nervously. "I see someone chose you" Carter said walking up next to me. "What do I do?" I asked. "Tell him your name tween. I gotta get back to work" she said walking away. Rat Tail trotted happily behind her. "Uh, I'm Emma" I said. I feel weird talking to an animal. Raddix nudged my hand and I patted his head. "Ok, well I'm gonna go- ahh!" I was cut off. He ducked between my legs and took off, taking me with him. I held on for dear life. "Emma! You ok?" Joey asked. "What the fuck!" I yelled. "Hold on!" Joey said. Joey flew in front of Raddix and he stopped. I sat up and turned around, still clutching onto the griffin for dear life. "Just relax. If he trusts you enough to let you fly on him then he'll listen to you. Its wherever you wanna go" Joey said. "I want to go back down to the ground" I said. "Griffins are energetic. Why do you think Carter is in hell?" Joey asked. I groaned. "I just wanna go back to work" I said. "Tell him that" Joey said, flying off. I looked at the beast I'm sitting on. "Hey Raddix? Can we go down into the marketplace?" I asked. He zoomed over that way. "Raddix! Slow down!" I yelled. He did immediately. "Oh wow, you are smart" I said.
We're watching tv now. Siren came home late. "I have a love hate relationship with these Christmas concerts I have to do" Siren said. "I don't know why. You're so amazing!" Joey said, hugging her. "Yeah but I'm so tired. Goodnight guys" Siren said. "Goodnight" I said. Carter came in quick and slammed the door behind her. "Guys! Help me block the door!" She said. "What did you do?" I asked. Clay and I ran over to hold the door shut. "I didn't do anything. This is why I don't talk to Rat Tail!" She said. We all flung back as the door opened and Rat Tail came in. "Is he allowed in here?" I asked. "No, but I cant get him to leave so I guess he's staying here until the morning. Come on shit head" Carter said. Her and Rat Tail went to her room. "I'm not cleaning up after thing" I said. "What do you say we call dibs on not cleaning so the others have to do it?" Clay asked. "Deal" I said. "Merry Christmas to them" he said. We high fived.
