The Wrong Crush

Jungkook had never seen a single human being on this planet more attractive than Kim Namjoon.  Every day that he would come into the office with his tie and rolled up sleeves, Jungkook nearly fainted.  He was constantly distracted throughout the day by the man seated in the next cubicle over.  Jungkook couldn't help but take frequent flirt breaks to talk to him.

He wasn't the only one who was interested in the built beauty next to him, though.  On the other side of Namjoon's cubicle sat Park Jimin.  A daily thorn in his side.  Jimin was gorgeous and he knew it.  He played up his feminine side to appeal to Namjoon and was, to Jungkook's irritation, significantly better at flirting than him.  Jimin always seemed to know how to make Namjoon laugh and what to do to get the older man's soft-hearted responses.  Jungkook seethed with rage each time Jimin would catch his eye and wink while Namjoon ruffled his hair or pinched his stupid, apple cheeks.  Jimin would always dart out his tongue over his plump lips in a way that was both sensual and adorable at the same time.  It was infuriating and it earned him Namjoon's sweet smiles without fail.

Sometimes Jungkook got the impression that Jimin was teasing him as much as he was flirting with Namjoon.  Sometimes he even thought that Jimin wasn't actually interested in Namjoon at all, but just wanted to make Jungkook mad.  And it worked every single time.

"Hi Jungkook," Jimin said in that teasing tone that made Jungkook's skin tingle.

"What do you want, Jimin?" He barely even spared the man a look as his eyes followed Namjoon into their boss, Kim Seokjin's office.

"Oh nothing, just wanted to tell you the good news," Jimin's smirk had gone so wide that his eyes became little crescent moons.

Jungkook didn't respond, too busy convincing himself that he didn't like the way his eyes smiled with his cheeks.  When he said nothing, Jimin continued, "Namjoon agreed to go to dinner with me tonight."

Jungkook finally locked eyes with Jimin and he was certain that all fifty emotions he was feeling were written across his face.  "You're going on a date with Namjoon?"

Jimin sat on Jungkook's desk and stared hard at him before nodding.  "Yeah.  You jealous?"

He was.  Jungkook was definitely jealous, though for some reason not in the way he thought he would be.  "No."

"Good," Jimin said, but his face said something else entirely.  He seemed frustrated.  Jungkook was sure Jimin was hoping for a reaction that he just couldn't give him.

Something in Jungkook's chest was wiggling unpleasantly.  He could barely stand to look at Jimin without getting irate.  But he was just mad because Jimin had won their little game and was going on a date with his crush...right?

When the end of the day came, Jungkook packed up his things slowly, eyes never leaving Jimin and Namjoon discussing where they would go eat.  Jimin flirted as usual, flitting his eyes to Jungkook in that teasing way he always did.  Namjoon seemed casual and carefree as always.  It unsettled him for some reason.  They both acted as they always do, but it made Jungkook feel like he was always on the outside, like it was never going to be him.

But did he want to win Namjoon over?  Did he want to be the one going on a date with the tall and beautiful man who'd occupied most of his thoughts for the last year and a half?  Or...no.  He supposed Namjoon wasn't the one who occupied his thoughts most.  If he was honest with himself, he thought mostly of Jimin and their rivalry.  He thought more of the shorter, ethereally gorgeous man who spent every moment of his day being a nuisance to Jungkook.

Then it hit him like a slap in the face.  He was jealous.  But not of Jimin for going on a date with Namjoon.  No, he was jealous of Namjoon for going on a date with Jimin.  He couldn't believe he hadn't seen it all this time.  He may have initially had a crush on Namjoon, but somehow through all the teasing and the arguing and the banter, Jimin had won his heart.  He couldn't let this date happen.  Not now that he finally understood that he had fallen in love with the man he'd been in competition with this whole time.

When Namjoon slipped off to the bathroom before they left, Jungkook gripped Jimin's arm gently.  "Wait.  Before you go, I just..."

Jimin smirked up at him in that vexing way he always did.  "You just what?  Going to try to convince me to leave your crush alone?"

"I...yes?  Kind of?"

Jimin chuckled and shook his head.  "It's not going to work, Jungkook.  I'm going, so you can just-"

Jungkook cut him off with a kiss.  His lips collided into Jimin's with a force that had Jimin gripping at his biceps to keep from falling backward.  Jungkook wrapped his arms around Jimin's waist and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss before parting and looking down into the shocked face of his rival-turned-love.

"Don't go.  Don't go out with Namjoon...go out with me instead," Jungkook whispered into the space between them.

Jimin giggled and buried his face in Jungkook's chest then looked back up at him with that eye smile that made Jungkook melt.  "I was wondering what it would take for you to admit your feelings for me."

"You-you knew?!  Before I did?!  How?!"

Jimin giggled again, covering his mouth with a small hand.  "When I first started, we both had a crush on Namjoon, but I could tell something shifted over time.  Which was good for me."

"Why?"

"Because it didn't take long for me to fall hard and fast for you, Jeon Jungkook.  I maybe only had a crush on Namjoon for a month before it was all you.  As cute as Namjoon is, he wasn't nearly as much fun as you," Jimin paused and tapped his lips.  "Plus, he is straight and has this really beautiful girlfriend.  Haven't you seen her pictures on his desk?  Or were you too busy watching me?"

Jungkook was stunned.  He guessed he was too busy watching Jimin to notice.  He wasn't sure what part of Jimin's speech was most shocking.  That Namjoon had very clearly had a girlfriend all along, which he now saw with clarity as he noticed, for the first time, all his pictures of her in his cubicle.  That Jimin had been teasing him for at least the last year and never had any intention of dating Namjoon after that first month.  Or that Jimin had just said he had fallen for him, too.

Namjoon returned from the bathroom to find a flabbergasted Jungkook holding a smug Jimin tightly to his body.  Grinning, he looked between the two.  "Hey guys.  What's going on?"

Jimin dipped his head in a shy smile and Jungkook flushed bright red.

"O-oh.  Hey, Namjoon," Jungkook started, glancing down at Jimin.  "Umm...I know you're going to dinner with Jimin tonight, but would you mind a rain check?  I, um, I kinda-"

Namjoon waved a hand to cut him off.  "It's fine.  Another time.  You two clearly need a dinner date way more than he and I do.  And to be honest, it's about damn time you two stopped dancing around each other and just date already.  The sexual tension between the cubicles is suffocating.  Took you guys long enough to just say it, though."  Namjoon chuckled and gathered his things.

"I'm glad you two finally admitted how you feel.  Have fun on your date," he winked and left with a wide smile on his face, leaving Jungkook and Jimin alone, still holding one another and blushing.

Jimin smiled up at Jungkook sweetly.  "Well, I believe I was promised a dinner date and my date just walked off and left me.  Care to stand in?"

Jungkook snorted out a laugh.  "Well someone needs to feed you tonight.  I guess it can be me."

A/N: I was at work last night and had this interesting thought after scrolling too much on tiktok.  Like...what if Jungkook and Jimin had both had a crush on Namjoon, but in fighting for his attention against each other, they accidentally fell in love with each other.  Thus, this short was born.  Wasn't sure exactly how I was going to write it, but I think it turned out kind of cute.

See you in the next one, Lovely ARMY's!
