Rainbow didn't end up texting Applejack when she got home. She procrastinated by doing things around her house she usually wouldn't in an effort to prevent overthinking, knowing she could trust AJ and Rarity is just a friend...right? Laundry was folded and placed somewhat neatly in a pile in her drawer, dishes were cleaned and stacked to dry beside the sink, and the bed was made with her soft toys huddled at one end. As she walked down the school halls the next day towards the cafeteria reflecting on this, she faced some regret about not texting AJ. Maybe they could have talked about what they were, contemplated a date even. As she got to the cafeteria door, three girls were blocking the entrance deep in conversation consisting of whispers and sly glances directed at the people around them. Dash had never seen them before but she couldn't be bothered to entertain her curiosity, politely asking them to move.
"Excuse me, sorry..." She said as she walked towards them, assuming they'd move out of the way. The girls looked up at her, the one closest with extremely curly blonde hair forming a fake smile, eyes lingering with judgement as she pushed the other girls slightly to let Rainbow pass. Dash thought their actions were weird, considering she'd never met these people before, but she brushed off the thought when her eyes caught sight of her friends at their usual table. Everyone else was there except Applejack, maybe she was just being held behind by Mr Crankydoodle with his consistent, "The bell doesn't dismiss you, I do."
As she made her way over to their table, it seemed as if Rarity was excitedly sharing a story with the rest of them, curious as to what she was telling, she sped up and sat down next to Fluttershy who greeted her with a smile and a light shoulder touch before turning to look back at Rarity. Everyone was sucked into the conversation so she leaned closer and tuned into what she was saying.
"...and then after we kissed, things began to get a little heated...if you know what I mean." She added, winking at their friends on the opposite side of the bench before continuing. "My gosh I was so flustered, I couldn't believe what was happening! After weeks of dropping hints she finally noticed! Oh I feel so happy we could actually be something." Rarity was explaining, the name of whoever was making her feel this way was unknown by Rainbow. Not wanting to interrupt the girl, she nudged Fluttershy gently and whispered, "Whos she talking about?"
"Applejack."
Realisation prickled across her body, making it instantly feel heavier as if she couldn't move and time froze. It didn't take long for her breaths to quicken, struggling to take in air while also trying to not gain attention from the avid listeners. She placed her hands on the table as if trying to steady herself as emotions of nausea, shock and hurt welled up inside. Applejack and Rarity kissed...and by the way she was describing it, something else happened too. Imagery vividly spread across her mind, slideshows of possibilities, each potential event causing an aching in her chest. Feeling tears building up, inching towards her waterline and bursting, she stood up and tried to think of where she could go to deal with this on her own. She couldn't let her friends see her react like this as it had the potential to ruin Rarity's hope and her friend's sympathetic joy. Trying to gather herself momentarily, she made a small excuse for her exit, "I'm going to go to the bathroom real quick Flutters, I'll be back in a sec." She mumbled to her friend, forcing the emotions from her voicebox so they wouldn't be heard before making her way towards the bathroom a fair way down the hall. In her pursuit of a secluded area, under highly imperfect timing, she ran into Applejack. With her sight blinded by glossy beads and vision tilted down, she ran into the worst person she could have right now.
"Woah there sugarcube, what's the rush? You okay?" AJ asked while moving her hands to hold Rainbow's sides, preventing her from moving. She tried to meet her eye level but she just forced her head down more. Dash didn't want AJ to know why she was upset, at least not yet, because while she was somewhat angry at Applejack's betrayal to an extent, she didn't enjoy confrontation.
"I'm fine Applejack, I'm just going to the bathroom." She replied, trying to squirm out of her grasp.
"You're not okay sugarcube, talk to me." AJ continued to pry, while directing them to the side of the hall, avoiding attention from passing by students.
"I'm really okay AJ, I just really have to go to the bathroom." Rainbow argued, trying to convince her so they wouldn't have to talk about the way her actions made her feel.
"Dash please talk to me."
"You want me to shit myself AJ?"
"...no...but please tell me, I can help you."
Rainbow didn't want to expose the way she felt, but AJ just wouldn't give up. Her emotions were high and the tears were close to breaking, she couldn't stop herself from firing back. "Yeah well maybe you should have thought about what 'helps me' before you fucked Rarity!"
Pushing Applejack's hands away from her arms, she shoved her to the side and paced down the hall in a speed walk in the direction of the bathroom, her eyes were unable to hold any more salty tear volume and broke tension, running down her face just as she made it into a stall. She locked the door behind her, sat on the folded-down seat and tried to take deep breaths. That could not have gone worse.
Applejack was left in the hallway in shock wondering where Dash had heard this information from and why the story was cut short. AJ reflected on the events occurring the day before as conflict between going after Rainbow or meeting her friends for lunch bounced back and forth in her mind.
Flashback: WARNING! NSFW
Applejack's hand was positioned where Rarity wanted her most. "Please AJ." She whispered, pushing her hand further down on her clothed lower body. To soften the intensity of what was about to happen, AJ slowly moved herself upwards until she was positioned ontop of Rarity before leaning down into a kiss. As their lips connected in a soft exchange, she moved her hand in slow circles above where she knew the right area was, gaining a soft moan as a response. The longer this continued for, the more the guilt grew in AJ, a sudden longing for Rainbow Dash and an aching as if her current actions of idiocy only just hit her. This is a challenge she'd be willing to lose. She pulled her hand away and broke the kiss with sadness in her eyes, mentally punishing herself for her stupidity and feeling disgusted with herself and what her body had committed. She sat up and looked at the confused girl below her who seemed to read her energy, covering herself with her shirt and sitting up too.
"Is something wrong AJ?"
"I'm sorry Rare...I can't do this." She considered explaining to Rarity her internal battle with her feelings for Rainbow Dash and her in the hope she'd understand, but she didn't want to make things messy.
"It's okay AJ," she replied smiling kindly as she placed a hand on Applejack's arm and grazed it in a gentle motion. "Not everyone is ready at this age."
"Oh...yeah," Applejack replied unsure whether she should correct her or not. She was ready, but she didn't feel right doing it with her knowing her connection with Rainbow was beginning to flourish.
"How about we watch a movie instead darling?" Rarity suggested as she pulled her top back over her head. AJ helped her pull the shirt down carefully over her perfectly curled hair in a friendly way to prevent awkwardness and present some form of aftercare.
"Yeah, I'd like that."
End of flashback
AJ didn't know how much Dash had heard, whether she had heard the full story or not, but either way, she agreeably reserves the right to be hurt. Applejack glanced in the direction of the cafeteria as the last few students began to scramble in before deciding to comfort Rainbow. As she walked down the hall, beelining for the bathroom, words of 'idiot,' 'selfish,' 'disgusting,' repeated in her head. She could reassure herself, that her actions made her an awful person.
