41] Mutts From the Past

Bex didn't like where they had decided to call it a night. There was something about it that made her feel on edge, more than usual.

She walked over to Finnick and sat down beside him, Woof was sharpening the swords with a rock and she hated the noise, whilst Katniss and Peeta sat with each other, just talking. It looked real,  "I'm sorry about Mags." 

Finnick nodded, "You loved her too...I uh...I wanted her to get through it. I would've liked to walk the beach in Four with her again." 

"I'd like to see that sometime...we need to find Jo." Bex told him and Finnick nodded, "And Blight, Chaff's out there too." 

Before Finnick could reply Bex quickly stood up, "No one move. Twelve I'm talking to you."  

Everyone looked around when they saw fog on the ground, "We need to go." 

Bex shook her head at Katniss's words, "No. It's not the poison. It's something else." She motioned over to Woof and he tossed her sword over to her which she caught effortlessly

She made her way over to Woof who had stood up, "Mutts." she said quietly 

"You sure?" The old man asked as he span his own sword around

Bex just gave him a look, "When am I not?" She turned back to the rest of the group, "Whatever you hear, whatever you see. It's not real. I promise you. It's not real." 

Finnick stood at her side but slightly in front so he could see her, "What's happening? What is this?" 

"Mutts." Woof answered for her and the lovers from Twelve shot up 

Bex looked around where they were, she couldn't see anything or hear anything but she knew they were around, she could feel them, they were here, "I told you this was too much like my Game. They're the Mutts from the 66th." 

"Shit." Finnick cursed when he remembered the Mutts from the 66th, the Capitol never used them again because they were so sick, but it would seem they had no trouble breaking them out for the Quell. 

Katniss let loose and arrow when she saw a shadow of a figure in the dark, but the arrow went straight through, "Forgot to mention...you can only kill the only that links to you." 

Finnick's trident immediately flew and it hit the blonde haired man who walked out of the forest and into the light, he seemed to hesitate when the body dropped to the ground before, "Not real right?" Finnick shrugged it off but Bex knew it wouldn't just be that easy. 

Two more 'people' walked from the forest, Bex didn't know them they didn't relate to her or Woof. But Katniss and Peeta. The former went to go forwards but Peeta saw sense and grabbed her arm, "It's not her. She's not here." 

"It looks so real." 

Bex turned around when she heard someone's breath hitch, "Marcus..." Woof sighed

Finnick immediately took Bex's hand when her father walked out of the trees, "You didn't do  anything." the Mutt of Marcus Dreesen said, "You let me die, dad. You let me down." 

Bex moved her head and sighed, Katniss and Peeta had gotten too close to their mutts, the mutts had gotten angry and started to do what they were made to, they were trying to kill the star-crossed lovers, "Go." Bex said to Finnick but she kept her eyes on her father, "We can handle it, they can't." 

Finnick gave her hand a squeeze before he ran towards Katniss and Peeta. Who seemingly had Katniss's mother and Peeta's brothers in front of them. Bex had seen these mutts before but that didn't mean they were any easier the second time around.

"I didn't let you die." Woof protested, "Rh..." Woof stopped, Snow was listening, he couldn't rat out his brother, "He pinned me. I...I couldn't. We couldn't-"  

Woof was cut off by a knife getting thrown straight into 'Marcus's' chest, and he dropped just like the others, the old man turned around and saw Bex standing behind him, her hand out, "He could link to you or me. My dad would never say you let him down...because you didn't. You didn't let any of us down." 

The pair span around when they heard rustling in the bushes. Bex looked over and saw Finnick standing in front of another mutt, this time it was a blonde haired woman, he was having trouble taking this one out as easy as the other one. 

"Fuck." Bex cursed when she saw who walked out of the woods next, "Leith."  This one was definitely hers. 

"It's your fault." He said and Bex shook her head, her fist tightening around the hilt of her sword, "I could've won. But I didn't because of you." 

Bex shook her head as she took a step towards 'Leith', "You killed yourself, that's not on me." 'Leith' had his own sword, he went to swing but Bex ducked under his arm and kicked him in the back, "I've grown up..." 

"I saved you remember? You're alive because of me. I taught you how to survive." 

Bex pulled herself together as she said, "Yeah...but you didn't teach me everything I know." 

'Leith' went for her again but she was quicker, she pushed her sword forwards and the end went straight through Leith's neck stopping him in his tracks, but those weren't Leith's eyes looking back at her, "For years I thought it was my fault...your blood is not on my hands." 

No one moved. No one talked. No one even breathed. Waiting for the next mutt to come from the trees, the next one of their loved ones they'd be forced to kill, but nothing came. No one came. 

After what seemed like hours Peeta spoke up, "You've done that before?" 

Bex nodded, she didn't have any words left to say. She didn't know what she was thinking or feeling. Finnick must have noticed that as he walked over to her and took her hand.
