Taehyung was having a good time. Jeongguk suspected that the gangster didn't like big birthday parties, so he'd chosen to spend the day in a way that was different from their routine, without being too extraordinary. In the morning, after breakfast, which they spent chatting peacefully, they went for a walk along the Han river. At lunchtime, Jeongguk had taken him to a restaurant where he had made a reservation a few days earlier. And now they were in the car, Jeongguk driving and Taehyung in the passenger seat. The singer's surprises apparently weren't over yet.
"You know, darling, I could have driven. All you had to do was give me the address." Taehyung said, knowing full well that Jeongguk didn't particularly like driving.
But the singer shook his head, keeping his gaze fixed on the road, as he tapped happily on the steering wheel.
"If I'd given you the address, it wouldn't have been a surprise anymore. Besides, I don't mind driving sometimes."
They soon reached their destination, Jeongguk stopping in front of a huge five-star hotel. Taehyung stared at the building for a moment before turning to Jeongguk, who looked away, his cheeks slightly flushed. A smirk formed on the gangster's lips.
"You're such a pervert, dove!" exclaimed Taehyung.
Jeongguk turned even redder and quickly slapped the gangster on the shoulder.
"S-Stop! I booked this hotel with Jimin's help, I wanted to do it somewhere other than home... I wanted something romantic, and Jimin told me you liked this hotel."
Taehyung couldn't contain his smile. Jeongguk seemed to have put a lot of thought and effort into it. And that was more than enough for him.
The two men got out of the car and headed towards the hotel entrance. But just as they reached the grand hall, which was sumptuous, Jeongguk turned to Taehyung and stopped him going any further.
"Wait for me here, I'll go and get the room key."
Taehyung wasn't really used to the singer taking charge, but he had to admit that it wasn't unpleasant. He couldn't wait to see what it would be like in bed...
"All right, darling."
Jeongguk gave a satisfied smile and headed for the reception area under Taehyung's watchful eye. When he reached the counter, the man at reception looked up at him, and Jeongguk immediately noticed the way the man judged him. It didn't help that he was wearing a dress.
"I'm sorry, but we're fully booked." The man said immediately, without bothering to greet Jeongguk politely.
"Hello to you too, and I have a reservation. In the name of Jung Jungkook."
The employee frowned, sceptical, but turned to his computer anyway, to check if what he was saying was true.
"Ah yes... I'm sorry, but we had to cancel your reservation."
Jeongguk's eyes widened as he felt the ground beneath his feet disappear.
"W-What? Why?"
"One of our regulars needed a room urgently, so we provided him with yours." Explained the employee, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"But I'd already booked it a month ago!"
But it was no use. No matter how angry Jeongguk got, he could see in the man's eyes what he had no right to say out loud: "you're nobody". This hotel was reserved for the elite of Seoul and the world. So inevitably, someone like Jeongguk would never win his case. He was devastated. He wanted to cry. He'd been preparing this day for Taehyung for weeks. And now he was going to have to tell him it was cancelled?
"You've got to be kidding me..." he sighed, on the verge of tears.
The employee looked at him haughtily, you could see that he wanted Jeongguk to leave, but that he was maintaining his professionalism. Jeongguk didn't really have a choice, he had to find something else. So he turned to leave, but was blocked by an arm around his waist. He looked up and came face to face with Taehyung, who had decided to join him.
"Is there a problem, dove? You were taking a long time, so I came to see if everything was all right..."
But Jeongguk didn't answer, just stared at the gangster with shining eyes. And Taehyung realised that something was definitely wrong. He pulled the singer against him, pressing their foreheads together, and whispered tenderly:
"Tell me what's wrong, darling. What happened, hm?"
Jeongguk swallowed, holding back tears of frustration as a lump formed in his throat.
"They've given my room to someone else, even though I booked it weeks ago! Just because I'm not rich...Just because I'm nobody... S-Sorry Tae, the surprise is completely ruined..."
Taehyung turned instinctively to the hotel employee, hugging Jeongguk a little tighter. And when the man caught sight of Taehyung's face, his eyes widened, and he immediately changed from his haughty attitude to a polite, hypocritical smile.
"M-Mr Kim! I didn't know you were coming..."
Taehyung straightened up, adopting that menacing aura that had become his signature. The employee instinctively took a step back, the gangster looking terrifying.
"Me neither, it was supposed to be a surprise from my lover for my birthday, but it seems you've decided otherwise."
The man swallowed. Taehyung was also a regular, one of the customers you didn't want to lose. The gangster used their rooms both for business meetings and for sleeping when he had a meeting in the area, since his flat was on the other side of Seoul.
"I-I'm sorry, we didn't know it was you. If we'd known he was your... um... partner, we wouldn't have acted the way we did..."
"That doesn't change the problem. I thought your hotel was the best in Seoul, but it seems I was wrong."
The man's eyes widened again, and Taehyung saw panic forming in them, soon taking over his whole being. If word got out that they'd refused Kim Taehyung a room, the hotel's reputation would take a huge hit. It would be a disaster.
"I'll sort this out quickly, Mr Kim. Just give me a moment, and I'll free up our best room for you-"
"That won't be necessary." Taehyung cut him off. "We're leaving, and I can assure you you'll never see me again. The service at this hotel is mediocre, and I'll be sure to make it known."
The employee broke down, unable to answer, because the world around him was falling apart. Taehyung paid him no further attention, concentrating instead on Jeongguk who, snuggled up against him, was staring at him with his big doe eyes.
"You know what I'd like even more than a sumptuous hotel room?"
The singer shook his head gently, listening attentively.
"An evening at home, just you and me, over a nice meal. Wouldn't that be great?"
