"Jungkook-"
Seokjin didn't have time to finish his sentence, because the singer threw himself on top of Minho, lifting him up as he passed behind him, using his body as a barrier against Jin, who immediately pointed his weapon to them, meanwhile Jeongguk put his under Minho's throat. The man felt the blade graze the skin of his neck, a drop of blood beading on the already reddish metal.
"Jungkook, release him." Jin ordered, his gun pointed at Minho.
For once, Jeongguk was quite happy for Minho to be a few centimetres above him, so that he was completely hidden and Jin could do absolutely nothing against him.
"There's no way I'm letting him go now. The only way he can leave this place is dead!"
"Jungkook, please. It doesn't have to come to this. You can still get out. The police haven't entered the building yet, and Kim Taehyung has the means to make you disappear."
Jeongguk shook his head.
"No! I'd kill him, even if it meant losing my life too! You can't imagine how it feels, Jin... He completely destroyed me that day. If I let him go, I'd blame myself for the rest of my life. I can't live knowing I'm still breathing the same air as him. All this, all these murders would be meaningless without his death!"
Jin understood. It was horrible, but he agreed with him so much. He'd never been able to find out who killed his brother. But if he had, he would surely have found them and killed them himself. Jin wanted revenge too. So he understood Jeongguk more than anyone. He felt tears welling up in his eyes.
"Jungkook, I can't let you do this... I'll feel like a failure again..."
The tears rolled down his cheeks, soon to be reciprocated by Jeongguk. They were both at an impasse, and it was so painful. Being forced to relive their worst memories was unbearable. To be confronted with a past they so desperately wanted to erase.
"I won't let him go." Jeongguk finally murmured. "So if you want to stop me, you'll have to kill him first."
Jin's eyes widened as he continued to cry.
"But-"
"There's no guarantee that even after that I'd stop. I may never be able to stop killing. And if he lives today, then I'll probably come back for his life. No, that's for sure. So the only way to end this is for me to kill him now. There's no other way out, Jin."
But if I let you do that, Jungkook, I'm the one who couldn't live with myself.
"If I understand correctly, we've reached a point of no return..." Jin murmured.
Jeongguk nodded. There was no way out.
"I refuse to leave you alone, Jungkook." Seokjin confessed. "I've ignored your pain for too long. I could never forgive myself if I abandoned you now. So let's share the burden together."
Minho's eyes widened in horror as he saw the detective point his gun at him. Jeongguk, for his part, watched him calmly, as if he already knew what was going to happen. As if he'd already guessed that this was how it would end.
There was only one way for Jeongguk to turn the page completely, to finally agree to leave this trauma behind. It was death.
"I suppose this is the end, Jungkook. Of this whole thing, and of us."
The singer gave him an encouraging smile.
"Hm. Thank you, Jin hyung. Thank you for these few happy years."
Jin felt his cheeks moisten again, his tears apparently not wanting to stop flowing. He hated what he was about to do, but he understood. He understood that this was what they both needed.
"Goodbye, Jin hyung."
"Goodbye, Jungkook."
Jin suddenly pulled the trigger, the recoil of the shot startling him. Then there was no sound. Minho didn't scream, not a single cry of pain. Not from Jeongguk either. The three men stared at each other for just a few seconds, but it was as if time had stopped. What had been a mere second seemed like minutes.
Then the two men suddenly collapsed, as Seokjin looked at them in devastation. A pool of blood began to engulf them, Minho having been hit in the chest. As had Jeongguk. But the singer felt no pain. Even though he was bleeding, he felt absolutely nothing.
His gaze was riveted on Minho, his eyes locked in his. And he could see the pain leave the CEO's face, as his eyes, until then filled with dread, gradually lost their glow. A satisfied smile played across Jeongguk's lips as he saw the life leave his eyes. He had waited ten long years for this.
It was pure beauty.
And there was Jin, his eyes wide with horror. He couldn't move, still struggling to realise what he'd just done. He knew this was what Jeongguk wanted, this was what he'd been waiting for. It was what he had planned. But that didn't change the horror of the scene. His oldest friend was bleeding to death before his very eyes, and yet he found himself unable to move.
"JEONGGUK!"
Seokjin was suddenly jostled violently, losing his balance and crashing into one of the classroom tables. He looked up quickly to see Taehyung running towards Jeongguk, completely ignoring the corpse of Kang Minho beside him.
Taehyung knelt down in front of Jeongguk, looking completely panicked, disorientated and horrified, his eyes already filling with tears as he quickly looked around for the source of his bleeding. When he finally found the wound, where the bullet had torn the skin and penetrated the flesh, covering the top of his chest, he quickly applied powerful pressure to it, trying as best he could to stop the blood. As his hands covered themselves in the reddish liquid, he could hardly make them out, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"J-Jeongguk, hold on, please! Jimin's coming soon, we're going to evacuate you and treat you, so please hold on!" he cried.
Seeing the sadness on Taehyung's face, the singer couldn't contain his smile. Who would have thought that someone could put the great Kim Taehyung in such a state of distress? Jeongguk was happy. He was happy to see that, finally, someone on this planet needed him. Someone on this bloody planet cared about him and would do anything to save him. Even put his pride aside to beg death to spare him.
Yet the blood seemed to continue flowing indefinitely, unstoppable by Taehyung's hands. Taehyung's distress intensified as the reddish liquid flooded the tiled floor of the classroom.
"J-Jeongguk, m-my dove, I beg you, don't abandon me... I love you so much Jeongguk, you can't even imagine how much I love you! I'd do anything for you, for you to stay, so please don't leave me!" Taehyung cried frantically.
Jeongguk continued to smile, and despite the weakness in his body, still managed to lift his hand, placing it on Taehyung's wet cheek, and began to caress it tenderly.
"Hey, shh, stop crying, love." sighed the singer reassuringly. "I'm not going to die. It's out of the question. I refuse to die now, when for the first time in ten long years I finally feel alive."
