Hello again.
The rest of my week was perfectly fine until Friday. After school, we were all to report to the barracks and spend our weekend in the army. I do not know why this is required. You'd think the Romans might evolve after two thousand years, because clearly, it didn't work out the first time.
"It'll be fine," Sebastian assured, meeting up with me outside the school. "Trust me. Just follow the rules and it won't be-"
"Hey!" Jason Grace ran up to us. He already has ten lines on his arm, which is terrifying when you really think about it, considering we are the same age. "Sebastian, don't scare her."
"I'm not!" Sebastian looked at me. "But you really don't want-"
"I'm your centurion, and I promise it'll be fine," Jason said. I knew what a centurion was from my Roman history class. "It's not as scary as everyone makes it seem. But, where's Reyna? I was gonna walk both of you there."
"I don't know," I admitted, looking around. "I never see her after school."
"She'll just meet us there," Sebastian decided. "Jason, question; will Suki have to thug out all the gear even though she can barely lift a chair?"
"I can lift a chair," I insisted.
"It just takes practice," Jason said to me. "Don't worry. You have naturally enhanced strength because you're a legacy. After the weekend of running around in all your gear, you'll be completely ripped."
I found Jason to be very nice. We didn't have any classes together, but he still went out of his way to talk to me. Apparently, he does that with any of the "weird" kids, even though Jason is a relatively normal person. He is very famous, as the only son of Jupiter, but he doesn't seem to enjoy the spotlight. He is just, a value I appreciate, and it is nice to know that he will be the centurion of my cohort.
I am guided to the barracks, which are clean but still have a strange smell. The fifth is much dingier than the others. The first is gleaming and beautiful, and filled with the strongest or most politically powerful legionnaires. The fifth is broken, the beds are old, the blankets are one wash away from disintegrating, and the people within are miserable to be here.
But, I caught sight of Reyna.
"Hi." I stood next to her and she quickly noticed me.
"Hi." She looked at her bunk. "I don't know which one to choose."
I wanted to ask if she wanted to share a bunk with me, but I didn't want to be pushy. "Do you want the top or the bottom?"
"Top is more private," she reasoned. "Bottom is less stinky." She turned to me. "You can pick. Do you want the top or the bottom?"
I was delighted that she wanted to share with me. "Top." I dropped my bag on the top bunk, and Reyna dropped hers on the bottom bunk. "We didn't see you outside of school."
"Teacher held me back," she said, her face darkening. "It's not important."
Jason clapped his hands and caught everyone's attention. He stood at the front with a girl I did not recognized, but I assumed her to be the other centurion. "Legionnaires, gear up! We're gathering on the field for war games!"
