for our final performance, we did my immortal by evanescence, just to make sure we really stood out. suki doesnt even want to do rock music, but her parts all had piano and melancholy singing, which is SO her, so thats what we did. we won, of course, which meant we had way too much money to spend on a bunch of junk.
but, we parted ways. suki went with claire, and wouldnt tell me where she was going, but I had a party to get to anyways, and the anxiety was eating me alive, unfortunately, but I definitely played it off as Reyna approached me.
"Five denarii." I took the money from her, delighted I won the bet. But then she handed me a twenty dollar bill. "A bet is a bet."
"What?" I stared at the money in confusion. my arm still hurt like a bitch, but I rejected ambrosia, since ambrosia and alcohol dont mix, and my plan was to get completely fucked up. "What bet? I know about the denarii and the chore, but a twenty?"
Reyna grinned. Her jaw was quite swollen, which made me feel a little bad, but she kinda asked for it. "Do you remember... around Valentine's Day, you were bitching about not having anyone to go out with. And I said I would beat your ass if you didn't shut up, and you said-"
The memory suddenly came to my mind. "'If you beat my ass, I'll owe you twenty dollars cash!'"
"Figured it goes the other way around, too," Reyna admitted. I pocketed the cash. "You're pretty good at what you do."
"Don't start telling me to join the military."
She snorted. "Yeah. Right. I can't imagine you going to the Marines or anything like that. You'd be one of the ones eating a bunch of Crayons." She crossed her arms. "You're a good warrior; but you're a better musician."
I kind of froze in place. "Did you just... compliment me?"
She immediately frowned. "Don't ruin the moment."
"My bad, my bad." I put my hands in my pockets. "You're good at fighting, too. Guess all that time training really paid off."
"Well, also my time in the Labyrinth."
"Ah, the good ol' days." I reminisced how much I wanted to kill myself in that stupid maze. "I'll have to tell my kids about that. Once upon a time, Daddy was stuck in a dank dark maze with a lesbian, a white boy, and a murderess!"
"You're so dramatic, and kids?" She raised an eyebrow. "Before you have kids, you need to get married. And before you get married..." She began moving past me, and she shoulder-checked the fuck outta me. "You need to get laid."
I rolled my eyes and glanced at her over my shoulder. "Yeah, I'm well on my way there, Reyna!"
"No you're not, you weirdo."
I suddenly realized I had never seen Reyna go in that direction on her own. "Dude, where are you going?"
"The library," she said, which surprised me. she kicked a rock as she walked. "Open until eight. And I lied to your mom about where you're going." She glanced at me. "Don't screw this up."
I gave her a thumbs up as she faded out of view. I think reyna is totally one of my best friends; she just acts like she's too cool for me. reyna isnt cool at all, as a matter of fact. I mean, shes mysterious and a little edgy and pretty smart, but cool? none of the people I know are very cool. reyna is actually a bit of a loser, and frankly, so is Jason. his love for spiderman is kind of concerning, but hey, at least he sat through all of into the spider-verse with me.
