Hello again.
I felt really awkward as I knocked on the door of Claire's house, holding my overnight bag. But she opened the door immediately, and I saw that her brown hair was a little messier than usual. And usually, she dresses in nicer blouses and these cute white flats, but now she was wearing a matching pajama set with little penguins on it, and SpongeBob socks.
"Suki!" She hugged me, then quickly pulled away. "Sorry. I should've asked first."
"It's okay," I said, but I'm not really used to girls hugging me. Reyna and I don't really hug, I guess. Then I began wondering if we had ever hugged.
She waved me inside. "C'mon. I've got all the baking stuff ready." She closed the door behind me. "Oh, but first-" She gestured to the living room, which was right there when you walk in. I got a bit distracted just looking at everything. Her living room is a lot bigger than mine, and her family has these fancy abstract paintings on the wall. We mostly have family photos or old artwork from childhood, but Lisa has asked me to paint some nice trees for her. "Suki, meet Mr. and Mrs. Obi."
I finally noticed the couple sitting on the couch. The woman was reading, and the man was grading school papers. They smiled at me and waved.
"Nice to meet you!" Mr. Obi said. He has a bad balding head.
"Nice to meet you," I said softly, looking at Mrs. Obi. "You have very pretty eyes."
She smiled and waved at me. "Oh, uh- Thank you!" Her eyes are this really pretty hazel color that stands out a lot against her dark skin. "Claire says you performed really good during the plays. I'm glad to hear that."
I didn't exactly know what to say, so to save my own embarrassment, I just decided to not speak at all, so Claire did instead. "We'll just be baking- and don't worry, I'm gonna clean it afterwards." Mr. Obi gave a thumbs up, and Claire led me further down the way, which led to this very big kitchen with a nice island counter and an entire wall dedicated to a mug collection.
Claire already had everything portioned into various blue bowls that all matched, and she had a big green KitchenAid plugged in. "Today we are making cherry bars. You're not allergic to cherry, right?"
"No," I said. I set my bag on a chair and joined her in the kitchen. "I've never even baked before."
"It's not as hard as everyone makes it out to be," Claire promised, clacking some buttons on the over. "First, you wanna pre-heat the oven. We already have some softened butter, and I got all of the sugar out, so let's just add things to the pot. Always do your dry ingredients separately, and then your wet ingredients, and then mix them together."
"Why?"
"It causes less clumping."
Well, baking was disastrous. Claire turned the KitchenAid up way too high, which got a crazy concoction of ingredients all over the kitchen. The cherry filling got all over her face, so she looked like she had been shot, so she decided to pretend to be Remus and wanted me to be Romulus. She found the whole thing hilarious, which made me laugh.
We salvaged what we could and baked it anyway, then sat and played a card game. I definitely had more fun than last night. It was a lot more lowkey, and I already know Claire, so I didn't feel so awkward. Well, up until we went to her room. She carried my bag for me, which made me a little embarrassed, so I got up the stairs as fast as I could.
