"Faye? Are you okay?" Dave discovered Faye leaning against the wall, her eyes closed as if trying to shut out the world. Concern etched his features as he approached her. "What's happening?"
She opened her eyes, her gaze heavy with exhaustion and distress, struggling to find the words to express what had just transpired. "It's Kurt..." she began, her voice faltering as she spoke. "He left." She managed to say before bursting into tears.
"Oh, Faye..." he knelt beside her. "Is there anything I can do for you? I'm here if you want to talk." He reached out a hand, offering comfort in the midst of her distress.
She sniffled, wiping away tears with the back of her hand. She took a shaky breath, deciding to open up. "I found..." she felt drained. "I found heroin, goddammit." Somehow saying it out loud was hard because it made it more real.
Dave didn't look surprised, his face reflected resignation. Faye's heart sank as she realized he knew about Kurt's situation all along. He had seen this coming, in a way. The signs were there. But hearing it confirmed still weighed heavy.
"Did you know?" She asked, intrigued with the absence of surprise on his expression.
"Yes," he admitted. "I knew about it for a while now."
"You... you knew?" Her eyes widened in shock. "Then why didn't you tell me?"
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I didn't know what to do," he confessed, his tone filled with regret. "I didn't know how you would react, how he would react. I was afraid of making things worse."
"Fuck," she covered her face with her hands. "I knew it. I knew he wasn't straight."
"What do you mean?" Dave thought she didn't know until now. "You knew he was doing heroin?"
"I... I caught him," she admitted quietly. "When we were in Portland."
As the weight of their shared secrets hung heavy in the air, they sat in silence, each grappling with their own emotions.
"I need to get out of here," she wiped the tears from her face.
"What? Faye, you can't just leave," Dave held her down. "It's late, and I don't think it's safe for you to go out alone."
"I know, but I can't stay," she pleaded. "Not after being called stupid for trying to help."
He hesitated, understanding the turmoil she was in but also worried about her leaving in such a state. He knew she needed space, but he also didn't want her to do anything rash.
"Please, stay a little longer," he implored. "Let's talk this through before you make any decisions."
"Maybe I am stupid," she sighed heavily, her shoulders sagging with exhaustion. "I thought I could help him, but I'm just making things worse."
"No, Faye, that's absolutely untrue," he insisted, reaching out to touch her arm. "You're not stupid. You were trying to help someone you care about, and that's incredibly brave."
"He made me feel like caring was worthless," she said, her voice trembling with hurt.
"I'm so sorry, Faye," Dave sighed, a pained expression crossing his face. "Kurt was probably out of control, and he didn't mean it. I'm sure he is struggling, and sometimes one can lash out at the people who care the most."
Faye nodded slowly. She knew deep down that Kurt's words were a reflection of his own pain, but it still hurt to hear them nonetheless. Dave prepared a steaming cup of tea in an attempt to offer a small comfort, hoping it might help calm her nerves.
