[ EPISODE FORTY EIGHT ]
✮
maya's expectations didn't go as planned. despite how late it was getting, they all remained oblivious to the time passing as they talked about anything and everything into the night. the three girls had crashed onto maya's bed, with carla fast asleep on top of them. gray, natsu and happy were sprawled out on the floor, too tired to wait for the sofa bed to be pulled out.
maya sighed, a small smile on her lips as she took a sip of her tea. for the past few months, maya had a love-hate relationship with sleep, and would sometimes struggle to get any sleep during the night. it became more apparent during her training with laxus, and even more so when she joined sabertooth. she had thought that after returning to her own home and bed, she would finally be able to get a good night's rest, but that didn't seem to be the case as even in the comfort of her apartment, she didn't feel any sense of fatigue.
although she admittedly was worried about natsu's strange attitude, she brushed it to the back of her mind as she watched the two sleep peacefully. she had placed a blanket over the two boys and exceed earlier to make sure that they didn't catch a cold, but it had been ditched to the side as gray slept with just his boxers and natsu had more than enough warmth in his body.
maya had spent so many nights awake like this, thinking about a flurry of things whilst the silence continued to taunt and torment her as she was left with only herself. however, right now in this moment, with the soft snores of her comrades comforting her, she no longer felt lonely. all her worries and fears melted away, as she felt protected and loved by the people she was with.
she couldn't leave all of that.
she stared at the envelope on the table. despite her rejecting the letter on several occasions, hisui had managed to sneak in it into her luggage before she left. she was still yet to open it and read its contents, afraid of changing her mind when she does, but she knew she couldn't keep putting it off.
her attention was suddenly caught when there was a crash sounded from her rooftop balcony. her eyes widened in surprise, glancing up as she could hear heavy footsteps stomping around above her, making her wonder what was going on. she glanced over at the others, relieved that they were still fast asleep, somehow unable to wake up from their deep sleep despite the ruckus.
maya placed her empty cup back on its saucer on the table before carefully tiptoeing past the boys and towards the loft door. she paused underneath it, hearing a the movements above go silent, piquing her curiosity as she was about to reach out the pull down the stairs. however, her hand hung midair as she realised she couldn't go up this way without getting caught by whoever it was. her head turned towards the end of the hallway, deciding that the only way up would be through a window.
she entered her bathroom, sliding open the window as a strong gust of wind blew past her, taking her by surprise. she glanced outside, noticing that the night was a lot windier and colder than usual. her eyebrows knitted together in confusion, but she didn't dwell on it for long as she grabbed the frame and pulled herself out, carefully balancing herself on the edge as she stood tall. her heart pulsed against her chest as she repeated to herself to not look down. she didn't have a phobia, but she wasn't the best with dealing with heights.
