"lisanna, watch out!" i leapt forward, grabbing the girl and getting the both of us out of the way of the attack. "are you okay?" i questioned, hovering over her as she smiled, looking up at me. she was completely tattered and beat up, our job request taking a turn for the worst as a group of level three bandits had hijacked the item we were protecting whilst we were distracted.

"yeah, thanks maya-chan." i helped her up, the two of us turning back to the bandits who were pleased with the damage they had inflicted on us. granted, i had less damage than lisanna since she had gone head to head alone with them to keep me safe.

it had been a year and a half since i had joined and i had gone on plenty of missions within my time at the guild so far, but i was still put on the sidelines. i admit that my skills as a warrior were no match to the skills of a wizard. no matter how far i pushed myself, no matter how hard i tried to prove that i could do it, i was benched in every battle. "get back," lisanna instructed, stepping forward. she was holding her stomach that had taken most of the damage, and she couldn't even stand up straight anymore. "these guys are a lot stronger than i expected."

"i can help," i assured her, trying to convince her to let me join. "i've been training with erza, i can take them on!" i argued, but lisanna stretched out her arm, blocking my path before i could take a step forward.

"please," lisanna pleaded, taking me by surprise. "i promised i would protect you." my eyes widened, taking time to process lisanna's words as she busily continued her attack, fighting off the last man standing. i could only stare helplessly, realising the burden that i was causing by being here.

i can't help.

her screaming and shouting was painful. even more so knowing that she had to push herself even further to protect the both of us, and couldn't even rely on me to help her.

that day, i learnt that my presence was a burden for those i joined in job requests with. no matter how hard i tried, no matter how hard i worked, no one could rely on me the way they could if they were working with another mage. although we returned with the reward money and the item safely received by the recipient, i couldn't bring myself to smile like lisanna did, as hers was satisfaction from winning the battle.
