"Do you both understand"? I was in shock. I nodded quickly. I looked to Jessica. She was also nodding. her teeth biting her thumbs skin, out of nerves. "Okay, we will continue to run more tests, but I need you to understand that at some point the test of time is the best one. If his body lacks, well sorry if his brain lacks activity for a long period of time, that is the test. His brain's lost of function leads to his body's lost of function. Slowly his organs will start to shut down". I felt my heart pang. All the hope in the world filled this room. Jessica grabbed my hand.
"Thank you Doctor". She managed to get out. He walked out of the room, not before mumbing a quick and quiet apology. He pretty much wanted us to decide, well he wanted Jessica to decide that if in a month or two, maybe even four Marco still wasn't showing any signs of living or dying, what we wanted to do. I mean how could someone even think of making that decision?
"I don't want to let him go". She admitted her head dug into my shoulder as she cried. I held her, running my hand down her back. "You don't have to just yet". I whispered
Her body shook with pain.
"Will you help me"? She pulled away from my body and looked into my eyes for a response. "I will help you". But how could I help make a decision that drastic for someone? I just needed Jessica to be okay. That's what Marco would have wanted. He would want me to help his daughter. I think I was trying to reassure myself.
The sounds of the machines were on for so long that at this point I was able to ignore them. Instead, I focused on Marco, his body seemed skinnier since I last saw him. He also seemed paler, it hurt to see him like this.
"Hello". I looked towards the door. I saw my mom. What the, what is she doing here?
"And I want to have a conversation with you". she shot darts at me with her eyes. I gulped. She handed Jessica a bag with what seemed to be food. They discussed for a bit. As my eyes stayed on the heart monitor, he had a pulse, this medical shit is so weird. He has a pulse but his brain activity isn't really telling us much, BUT YOU NEED THE BRAIN TO TELL THE HEART TO PUMP BLOOD. This is so stupid.
I feel so frustrated. I gripped onto the beds bars. He deserves a comfier bed. A warmer blanket.
"Y/n walk with me". I stopped thinking of what else would make this room seem less dead. I followed my mom out of the room. Waking into the stupid fluorescent halls. "What are you doing here"? "Why didn't you tell me". We both spoke at the same time. I couldn't help but smile. Maybe to fight up the room my mom would have to be there all day and night.
"You first". We walked to the elevator. I'm going to get him a blanket from home. "Why didn't you tell me any of this"? She signaled towards Marco's room. "I didn't want to stress you out". She grabbed me by my ear. Yanking it just like she did when I was younger. But it still hurt the same. And it was still embarrassing. If not more embarrassing.
"I'm supposed to worry about stressing you out. My job is to stress out". I felt my nose flare up. "I know". I look down at my fingers which were anxiously twirling amongst each other. "I know". I repeated when I didn't get a response from her. "Y/n". I looked up at her who had this pitiful expression I fucking hate that expression. "He's not looking better is he?" I shook my head. I desperately wanted that to be wrong. "How are you holding up baby girl". My jaw clenched. That's all she needed to bring me into her arms. "It's going to be okay. I can feel it. He's strong. Maybe even stubborn". She was right about that. She cradled my head in between her arms.
"I love you. But next time you hide something I'm going to kick you in the nuts," My eyebrows furrowed. "And I'm not joking".
"I know I'll be more open. I promise". I wrapped my pinky against hers and kissed my own hand just as she did. "Let's go back then".
