A few weeks passed by and Darren and the gang were having fun enforcing the protection racket while the rest of the boys were depressed, scared and always worrying about how to pay on time
Sean sat back and let Darren and the gang do all the work while he took 50% of the money
Matthew enjoyed being with the gang but he still felt angry being away from his mother and he was still behaving badly often
One lunch time Matthew and a group of boys were standing outside a house. The house looked rundown. The garden was overgrown as if a very old, lazy, or sick person lived there. It was a sunny day and Matthew had his school shirt open and was wearing a baseball cap
Matthew and the boys threw stones at the house while laughing
A frail old man with a walking stick walked out looking angry
''OI YOU KIDS! STOP IT! GO AWAY!'' he ordered
Matthew threw a stone at the man and it hit him in the face. The old man cried in pain and the boys laughed
A woman came out from the next house. She was fed up and very angry as boys had been terrorising the poor old man for a long time and enough was enough
''I'm going to call the police if you don't go away right now!'' she said
''Come on boys let's go!'' Matthew said
The boys ran off shouting and laughing
The woman walked around to the old man's garden to see if he was ok
''Are you ok Ted?'' she asked him
Ted shook his head and was in obvious distress and his neighbour tried her best to comfort the poor old man
''Those bloody kids they are here every day throwing stones and tormenting me. I can't take much more of this at my age'' Ted said
The woman was very angry ''It's those Grange Road boys, I recognize the uniform. Don't worry Ted Love I will phone the school to complain''
Ted was bitter ''What good will that do? I already phoned them several times and they say they will look into it and nothing happens. I also phoned the police a few times and they were useless too. No one cares, no one will do anything''
''Well i'll make them care and i'll make them do something'' she said and rang the school
Cynthia was at her desk when the phone rang and she answered ''Good afternoon, Grange Road School, Mrs Rigby the school secretary speaking....boys throwing stones?... they were wearing a Grange Road uniform?...ok let me put you through to the headmaster he will talk to you''
Ted's neighbour was on the other end ''Thanks'' she said
Cynthia put the call through to Sean in his office
''Hello Sean Lewis the headmaster speaking?''
The woman told him about the boys throwing stones at Ted's house
''Yes i see'' Sean said grimly after she had explained it all
''This has been happening for weeks now'' she continued ''Ted is very old and frail now I worry this is going to affect his health, the stress, and so on. Something should be done to stop these boys. I also don't want to live next door to it, they could just as easily target my house if they wanted to''
