8.1 - The end of the world

Inside the cramped and damp rental house, there was an unpleasant smell lingering in the air; it was the smell of rotting food.

A thin man was lying on a shaky-looking single bed. He was wearing an old gray white shirt, and his messy and dirty hair was tied into a knot, covering his eyes, making it difficult to tell his emotions. His beautifully shaped lips were dry and chapped, and were tightly pursed into a straight line.

Shen Mian maintained this posture for a long time.

He vaguely remembered the annoying system buzzing in his ear: [Current unbinding process - 100%]

Then the electric current sound that once annoyed him finally disappeared from his ears completely.

He got out of the system, but... he didn't go home.

So the question is, what the hell is this place?

  And...what is this thing?

The soft little thing on his arm moved a little, and Shen Mian was so scared that he held his breath. The little guy looked at him cautiously, then lay back down peacefully, but his little hand was still tightly grasping the hem of Shen Mian's clothes.

Shen Mian didn't know why he was afraid of such a small thing. Perhaps it was because of his extraordinary keen intuition, he always felt that something bad was going to happen.

He had just escaped from the previous world and was exhausted both physically and mentally. He didn't want to get into any trouble.

But obviously this wish could not be realized. After a while, I heard a "gurgling" sound coming from the little guy's stomach.

Shen Mian opened his eyes, and the child froze. He raised his little head tremblingly and looked at Shen Mian, seeming to be... panicked?

"I, I'm not hungry." The little guy defended in a low voice.

In fact, he probably didn't have the energy to speak loudly. This was the first time Shen Mian looked at him straight in the eye. This child was so thin that there was almost only bones left.

Compared to this, what Shen Mian sensed first was the fear hidden in the child's words, as if telling him how terrible hunger was.

Although he didn't like children, out of a sense of responsibility as an adult, he sat up resignedly.

Without the system, he knew nothing about the world. He didn't even know who he was, so he was very confused now.

The room was even messier than he had imagined. The gloomy and moldy smell made his head ache. He had little strength and finally found some food. In the refrigerator, which had been cut off from the power, there were only a few yellowed vegetable leaves, expired bread slices, and only one egg left.

There was no electricity, but there was gas. He poured oil into the pan and heated it up, then put the bread slices in. The pan immediately started sizzling and soon both sides turned browned. He immediately took out the bread slices, fried the eggs, added the vegetable leaves, and finished the dish.

He was just about to call the little guy to come over to eat, but the child had already followed the smell, but did not dare to come forward, and hesitantly hid behind the door to peek.

Shen Mian hooked his finger at him. The child was stunned for a moment, then he grabbed his clothes with his little hands and walked towards him in small steps.
