Onika Maraj Bey's Home
Same Night
It was pushing 8pm when I finally left the hospital. I told Blue I'd be back tomorrow, leaving her with Beyoncé and Solange. I sat in my car for a minute, just staring out the window and letting out a long sigh.
Today was too much-way too much. Everything that happened, everything Beyoncé said, was still ringing in my head.
I finally stepped out of the car, heading into the house and straight upstairs. I'm done. I don't need to be here anymore, I can handle this on my own. Beyoncé was out of her damn mind today, and I know she was scared, but blaming me for what happened?
That's what really fucked me up.
I went into the closet, grabbed my luggage, and started throwing my things in. There's no way I'm staying here after everything that went down.
I grabbed my luggage from the closet, tossing clothes in without thinking. My phone started ringing, and I sighed, pulling it out of my pocket. I put in my airpod and answered.
"Hello?"
It was Lauren. "Hey, I heard about Blue. How is she?"
"She's fine now," I replied, trying to sound steady.
Lauren didn't wait long. "What happened?"
I paused, not sure if I wanted to go into it. "Do you really wanna know?"
"Hold on, let me sit up, bitch," Lauren said, her usual playful tone coming through even though I knew she was serious now.
"It's a lot," I muttered, feeling the weight of it all.
I chuckled, trying to keep it together.
"Dad happened," I said.
"What the fuck?" Lauren shot back, clearly confused.
"He brought me flowers earlier. I left for lunch, and it turns out the flowers had some kind of chemical in them. She passed out and it stopped her heart for a bit," I explained, still trying to make sense of it myself.
"No fucking way! So, he was actually trying to hurt you and make you pass out ?" Lauren asked, her voice full of shock and disbelief.
"Yeah... or worse," I said quietly.
"Nika, no," she whispered, sounding hurt.
"The night I went to meet him for dinner, he warned me. Told me I was making a huge mistake by not testifying. Whatever he's involved in, he doesn't give a shit about us anymore. I still think he had something to do with Mama getting killed," I admitted, feeling like the weight of it all was crushing me.
"But we know who did that," Lauren replied, but I could tell she was starting to second-guess everything.
"Yeah, but who's to say he didn't tell her to do it?" I snapped back, feeling my anger rising.
