It's been a week since I last saw Onika, after our heart-to-heart, and she's been enjoying her time in Trinidad with her family. True to her word, she calls at least once a day to check in on the babies, and she and Blue have their own conversations too.
This morning, I was getting the twins ready for their three-month checkup. It was new doing this on my own, but I loved it.
Blue helps when she can, but since she's at school, it was just me and the babies today, and they were extra fussy.
"I'm sorry, bubba," I said to Brennox as I changed him.
They both had just had a bath and weren't happy with the cold air. I get it.
Onyx started crying again. At this point, I was beginning to think they were having a competition to see who could cry the loudest. I shook my head.
"What are you crying about, little man? You're already dressed," I said, reaching over to place his pacifier in his mouth.
I have to admit, taking care of twins by yourself is hard work. It made me respect Onika even more for doing this while taking care of me back then. It's exhausting, mentally and physically.
If I'm being honest, Nicki was still looking out for me-she had her sister call to see if I needed her to take the boys for a bit, so they were going with her later today, giving me a little time for myself this weekend. I really appreciated that.
"Alright, Brenny boy, you're all set," I told him, but he kept crying. I picked him up, and he immediately started sucking on his fist. "Ah, I see. Still hungry, huh, fat self"
I glanced over at my phone and noticed I still had thirty minutes before we needed to leave. I grabbed the bottle Brennox hadn't finished and started feeding him. Just as I settled him in my arms, my phone rang-it was Nicki FaceTiming me.
I answered, and she greeted me with the biggest smile.
"Hey friendddd," she teased, making me chuckle.
"Hey friend slash baby mama," I joked back.
"Oh aht aht, I'm nobody's baby mama. I am the mother of your kids, let's fix that, boo," she corrected, her energy practically radiating through the screen. You could tell she was happy, and she deserved every bit of that joy.
"You're right, my apologies."
"Let me see my babies..." she said, her voice softening. I turned the phone toward Onyx, who was content sucking on his pacifier and looking around.
"Hi papa... mommy misses you, cute boy," she cooed sweetly. I then shifted the camera to Brennox, who was still focused on eating.
