Same Day

The car was dead quiet, but I could feel everyone's nerves, the anticipation thick in the air. Kelly sat next to me, her eyes fixed forward, hands clenched tight on her lap. Solange was on my other side, chewing her lip, her gaze intense.

We all knew what was coming, but nobody needed to say it out loud. This wasn't our first time in high-stakes situations, but today was different. It was personal.

The intercom crackled, and a SWAT guy's voice broke through, steady and calm.

"Alright, team, quick rundown. This is a hostage rescue. Our goal? In and out, no harm to anyone if we can help it. We go in, stay in control. If they pull out weapons, we adjust as necessary. Lethal force is a last resort, but if we've got no choice, we do what we have to."

I took a breath, steadying myself. I glanced at Kelly, and she nodded. Solange gave a quick smile, tight but determined.

We were all on the same page.

"Targets are in the south wing," the SWAT leader continued. "Two groups, two exits. Kelly and Solange, you're holding the perimeter. Beyoncé, you're with me. Let's keep it smooth."

"If anything goes wrong, remember your exits," he said, his voice dropping to a more serious tone. "We're moving in pairs, no one gets left behind."

The car fell silent again, and I looked out the window, feeling the gravity of what we were about to do. Another voice came through the intercom, barely a whisper.

"Let's get them out safe. We're bringing these babies home today for Christmas."

I nodded to myself, my mind already there, locked in. We were getting close, and I could feel the intensity in every heartbeat. There was no backing out now.

We had a job to do, and we were going to see it through.

Solange and Kelly each reached over, resting a hand on my thigh. I glanced at them, feeling a quiet rush of warmth in the middle of all the tension. I smiled, a small reassurance, even though deep down, none of us knew what today would bring.

"I love you both," I said softly. "Please, stay safe."

They squeezed my thigh, exchanging a glance before looking back at me.

"You too," they replied in unison.

The car came to a stop, lights off, tension thick in the air. Our earpieces crackled as the SWAT leader's voice came through.

"Alright, two guards up front, one on the west side. Hostages confirmed inside. Move in."

I exchanged a quick nod with Kelly and Solange, then slipped out of the car, keeping low. We were barely in position when shots rang out, breaking the silence.
