Onika Maraj Manhattan High School
It was finally lunch time, and I grabbed my salad from the little fridge in my office. Just as I sat down, the door flew open. Of course, it was Blue.
I shook my head, taking a bite as she strolled in with food in her hands.
"How'd you get food?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Someone brought it to school for me," she said, way too casually. I knew she was lying.
"Who?"
She gave me a look. "You're nosey as f-..."
I sat up, pointing my fork at her. "As what? Finish that sentence, and I'll stick my foot up your ass."
She sighed and sat down, defeated. "Jashawn."
"Absolutely not, Blue. He's a senior. Why are you with him?"
She rolled her eyes, acting like I was the one being ridiculous.
"He's cool, Ms. Nicki."
"Blue, you're 14. Dead that now."
Jashawn was part of my boyfriend's crew, and I knew he was no good. I didn't want that for her. Hell, I didn't even want this life for myself.
She stood up, clearly over it. "Never mind, I shouldn't have come in here. All you do is bitch at me. You need to have kids to boss around, 'cause l'm not it."
Before I could respond, the door opened again, and there stood Tre-my boyfriend, looking sharp as ever in his suit and those damn snake-skinned shoes.
He had flowers in his hands.
Blue's attitude flipped, and she jumped at him. I couldn't help but shake my head and stifle my laugh, what is wrong with this girl?
Tre chuckled. "These kids," he said, looking at me.
I didn't say anything, just kept eating my salad, not in the mood for whatever was coming. He walked over and set the flowers down on my desk.
"You not happy to see me?" he asked, his voice smooth.
l ignored him, hoping he'd just leave it alone, but he didn't. He grabbed my chin hard, forcing me to look at him.
"You not happy to see me?" he repeated, more insistent.
"Yes," I muttered, feeling the tension building.
He leaned down and kissed me, then glanced at my neck, fingers brushing over the spot l'd covered up. "You did good hiding that."
"I shouldn't have to hide it," I whispered, barely audible.
"What?" he snapped, narrowing his eyes. "Speak up."
