I stood in the kitchen, leaning against the counter as Nicki dried her hands after finishing up the last dish. My mom had come over earlier and saved the day, like always, making sure we had more than enough food.
God knows I don't cook, so the help was much appreciated. I glanced over at Nicki, who was quietly putting away the dishes as I put up the leftovers.
"Need help?" she asked, her voice cutting through the quiet.
"Sure," I said with a soft smile, grateful for the company.
We worked in silence for a while, the clinks of dishes and the hum of the refrigerator filling the air.
"You okay?" I finally asked, giving her a sideways glance.
"Yeah, I'm just learning how to be by myself, you know? It's new," she answered, but there was a heaviness in her tone that didn't match her words.
"Yeah... I'm sure it's an adjustment," I said, pausing as I wrapped up another dish. "But you deserve to be happy, Nicki. You know that, right?"
She didn't respond right away, and for a moment, the silence returned, a little heavier this time. We kept working, our hands busy but our thoughts clearly somewhere else.
Then, out of nowhere, she asked, her voice soft but curious, "Why are you single?"
I glanced at her, a small smile tugging at my lips. I knew the feeling - the questions that start creeping in late at night, the ones that don't have easy answers.
"I guess work," I said with a small shrug, trying to keep it light. "And you clearly know my teenager is a full-time job with the attitude." We both laughed, breaking the tension.
Nicki's gaze lingered on me a little too long, her eyes darkening as they scanned my face. There was something behind them-something I hadn't noticed before, or maybe something I'd ignored.
She bit her lip slightly, her body language shifting as she leaned a little closer to me, her voice soft but laced with intent.
"Well, you deserve to be happy too," she said, her eyes locking onto mine in a way that made the air between us feel heavier.
I noticed it then-the subtle flirtation, the way her words dripped with something more. My heart started beating faster as I processed what was happening.
It wasn't just the words. It was her body language, the way she shifted closer, her lips just a little too tempting, her fingers brushing mine ever so slightly as we stood next to each other.
Nicki moved even closer, her eyes locking onto mine as her hand brushed against my arm. Her breath was warm, and I could feel it against my skin as she leaned in.
