"The Emperor is truly too kind. How could this old minister dare to be so bold? It is truly my fortune that Your Majesty has graced us with your presence," Duke Ying humbled himself, bowing deeply with hands clasped, displaying utmost deference.

It must be said that Duke Ying was smarter than the Empress Dowager—at least in terms of appearances, he played his part to perfection, making it difficult to see any trace of his ambition.

Ning Chen narrowed his eyes, putting away his thoughts, and personally helped the Duke of Ying to his feet.

It was all an act...

"Uncle, you're too humble. I remember when I was young, I used to visit this manor often, and Aunt's crispy meatballs were always the best. I remember eating half a plate and still feeling it wasn't enough."

Upon hearing this, the Duke's wife, Lady Wang, quickly smiled and curtsied.

"If Your Majesty enjoys that dish, this humble woman will personally cook it today. It won't take long."

The Duke nodded in agreement. "Indeed, since His Majesty rarely visits, let's arrange for lunch before you depart. I'll have someone prepare a banquet right away."

Naturally, Ning Chen agreed. After all, his real intention was to stay longer at the Duke's manor to search for something.

Lady Wang went to the kitchen, and since Ye Yun, as a woman, also needed company, the Duke's eldest daughter-in-law, Lady Mei, accompanied her.

Though the Duke's eldest son, Chen Xianwen, was rather incompetent, his wife was quite formidable. Even though Chen Xianwen had lost his right to inherit the title, Lady Mei still held considerable influence within the household, helping her mother-in-law, Lady Wang, manage the family affairs.

Of course, part of this was due to the strength of Lady Mei's own family, but if she herself weren't capable, she wouldn't be able to maintain such authority.

It was worth noting that today, coincidentally, the second daughter, Chen Suzhi, who had married out, had returned and was also present to help entertain guests.

Chen Suzhi was the one the Duke had once arranged to be sent into the palace in hopes of placing her by Ning Chen's side. Unfortunately, that plan had fallen through, and she was instead married off to Liang Chengsi, the legitimate second son of Rongqing Marquis.

However, judging by her somewhat haggard appearance, it seemed her life hadn't been going very well.

"I wonder what type of tea Your Highness prefers? I'll have someone prepare it. These pastries are all quite good, please try some," Lady Mei smiled as she entertained in the garden hall.

Ye Yun sat down and waved her hand politely. "You're too kind, Lady. I don't have any particular preference, but Junshan Silver Needle or Longjing will do."

"That's a coincidence. I recently received a box of Junshan Silver Needle from my family. I'll have someone fetch it now," Lady Mei replied and immediately sent a close maid to get it.

In contrast to Lady Mei's grace and ease, Chen Suzhi appeared much more uneasy, as if she didn't want to speak.

Ye Yun noticed this and took the initiative to speak up.

"It's been years since we last met, and now the second young lady is already married. Your gown looks beautiful; it seems your husband dotes on you quite a bit."

This wasn't an empty compliment. The gown Chen Suzhi wore was made from fine silk, and the fur collar was rabbit fur. Though not as expensive as fox fur, the rabbit fur collar stood out for its pure white color, without a trace of impurity.
