78. Goodbye

The door swung open. "Oh. Y/N." Shoto invited you inside.

"Hey, Shoto." You greeted him. "What's up?"
He gave you a half hearted smile and said, "She's upstairs." Before walking back inside.

You were confused. What was up with him? He was being distant, giving you the cold shoulder. Was there something wrong? Did you do something to piss him off?

You decided to deal with that some other time and made your way upstairs.

"Y/N?" She pulled you in for a hug when you entered. "Happy birthday!"

"You remembered!" You said.
"Of course I did. You're my daughter!" She said. Then, her face fell. "Oh, Y/N.... I'm so sorry. I don't have a gift for you." She said, feeling guilty. "All I'll be giving you is a goodbye."

It dampened your mood too but you didn't show it. "That's alright." You gave her a sad smile.

She sighed. "I swear I'll visit as much as I can."
You nodded.

"On the bright side..... We have a last couple hours we can spend together." She said.

You chuckled and began indulging in small talk with her.

You were upset she was leaving but it couldn't be helped. But before she left, you had a lot of things to ask her.

"Mom... I have a question." You looked around unsure. She gave you a knowing look and sighed. "I know." She said.

"You're going to ask me why i hid it from you. The fact that I was a hero." She pursed her lips. "I didn't mean to lie to you. I grew up in this town with Enji. He was my neighbour, my best friend. His parents were the top heroes. I always admired them. I wanted to be a hero too. But your grandmother hated it."

You rolled your eyes. "I told her I'd do it anyway. She said she would let me if i promised never to reveal my identity to the public. I agreed."

You gritted your teeth and clicked your tongue. She gave you a sad smile. "I know she can be a real....pain. But she had her reasons, Y/N." She said. "She knew Enji's parents closely. She saw how much they would argue. Enji's life was miserable because of it. She thought it would be best if i didn't go down that path."

"So, I started a hero agency with Enji but then..... Things became complicated." She scratched her head. "Enji told me he had feelings for me."

Your jaw hung open. "But I was in love with your father. Enji insisted i choose him instead but of course, I didn't. That's when everything changed. A rift started to form between us. We went our separate ways after that. I married your father and had you and..... Ni- your brother and Enji got into a quirk marriage."

"I was still in touch with him, of course. We had an agency to run. But he was still in love with me. I could see it in his eyes. His children hated that, of course. Natsuo and Toya were always fond of me. But when they grew older they began to understand....."

"That's why Natsuo was so angry earlier? He found out you were here." You said.

She nodded.

"It turned out that your grandmother was right. I kept my profession a secret from you two and my life had never been better. I was the happiest I had ever been."

A tear formed in her eyes as she remembered her previous life. "But then.... Your brother found out that i was Vortex. He was only a child. But it destroyed him. Because he never got a quirk. And then you came along. He was always protective of you. He loved his little sister. But then, you got your quirk. And it was just like mine. His love turned into hatred and... something changed.
